The idiosyncratic aura of Oudh Ma'al Wardh by Al Haramain
Oudh Ma’al Wardh by Al Haramain
Literally an eye opener for those who are not accustomed to the pungent odour of some of the wonderful concentrated perfumed oudh oils from the Arabian perfume houses. A mellow and slightly nutty softness will eventually emerge, one that will seem quite warming and could have you surreptitiously burying your nose into your wrist from time to time to see if the metamorphosis is really true. The change that I refer to is immense and absolute. From the shock of a squall to one of stillness and calm, from being aghast to being pleasantly soothing.

Initially the scent seems to all but be a physically attack upon the nose while rushing to rip the throat away, one might not know whether to be brave and stay the course or rush to scrub this acrid fetor away, as none of the promised floral notes seem to make an appearance. This fragrance is definitely one to apply at least ninety minutes before entering the commuting confines of your local metro or any other travel system at rush hour. Spray a little too much and you might gag and keep all others at bay, but then wait … wait. Then wait some more and candyfloss lightness emerges from the white hot, barbed wire assault. A contradicting creamy essence has evolved and one that might remain for the rest of your day. This is an outstanding and incomparable Oudh blend, a mukhallat like no other; an acquired appreciation that could need a revisit or two before a definitive conclusion is determined.

Many thanks to Apicius for the sample.

Very Strange but Very Good!
Today is a beautiful summer night in Berlin, and I am sitting outside an Indian restaurant in Charlottenburg. Since I had no intention to spend this evening in a closed room, I decided I could as well be courageous enough for Oud Ma'al Wardh.

Oud Ma'al Wardh is so far the strangest Arabian oud perfume I have come across. It is truly beautific! Especially the opening can be off-putting, and I would like to endorse Flaconneurs advice to give it a little time to settle down. For me, the opening is sweetish-animalic. It reminds me of the stench of a pigsty – an olfactory experience that can hardly be made in Muslim countries!

Do not let this description keep you from testing it if you have the chance – you just have to be a little open minded. After an hour or so, the animalic side becomes more discreet and integrates well into the woody background. Suddenly, you have an attractive, very physical fragrance on you.

What is the mystery of oud perfumes? It is not the woodiness which just provides the frame. It is the mustiness that can have leathery and strange animalic aspects. Even if you wouldn't like such a perfume at first sniff, something is happening when you decide to actually wear it. It turns out to be simply fitting – as an addition to your own personal odors. Like a new flat, you will need some time to really feel at home in it, but you definitely will.

Oud Ma'al Wardh is being described as a mukhallat, a blend. I suppose the “Wardh” stands for rose. Personally, I do not find any rose accord as we know it in this fragrance. Maybe the slightly sweetish approach at the beginning can pass as something floral.

Oud Ma'al Wardh can by far not be compared with the numerous oud perfumes that the western brands are currently launching. From my brief experience with natural oud oils I would say it contains rather that, and not the oud bases provided by Givaudan and Firmenich. In fact, Oud Ma'al Wardh has very little in common with Montale's Black Aoud or Micallefs Aoud Man and the like.

But how can one explain colors to blind people? If you haven't had the chance yet, try to get your hands on some of the real Arab stuff. Oud Ma'al Wardh is quite pricey, with currently 22 USD at Zahras – why not risk a blind buy?

OUDH MA'AL WARDH by Al Haramain
Al Haramain was established in Saudi Arabia in 1970 and creates perfumes for the world marketplace. They initially produced oriental fragrances but an aggressive interest in agarwood-based perfumes changed the company's focus. This was my first experience with any perfume from Al Haramain.

Oudh Ma'al Wardh introduces itself with a very sharp, pungent, woody oud. You can virtually smell the narrative account of the trees' 300 year old heartwood, including a moldy undertone. This fragrance is very dense, slightly heavy and quite natural smelling in the opening. It maintains a linear structure right through to the dry-down. It even develops a slightly nutty quality the longer it sits on the skin. This fragrance conjures up visions of antiquity with all of its complex scents. This Arabian fragrance is very true to its heritage and does not disappoint. Oudh Ma'al Wardh has stages of intensity, not complex layering. Don't judge this fragrance too early; it gets better with time. It starts maturing at least one hour after application. Just like agarwood heartwood, which takes many centuries to produce its dark, aromatic resin, Oudh Ma'al Wardh will reward the wearer given a little time.

It's difficult to compare Oudh Ma'al Wardh to any other fragrance I've sampled. This is the first fragrance I've experienced with a very basic natural structure. It is more like what you would expect from a perfume oil not an Eau du Parfum. This scent is pure, natural and sits very close to the skin. I liked Oudh Ma'al Wardh's simplicity and natural framework, it definitely is not a pretentious fragrance.
