From the shine...
In October 1946 Christian Dior founded his fashion house and presented already on 12. 2. 1947 his first collection, which made him immediately famous. The success can be called historic today ; Dior is since then considered the inventor of the "New Look". What many people are less aware of is that immediately upon founding his fashion house, Dior already felt the need to register his "Société des Parfums Christian Dior". Already in March 1947, this was registered.
The clever Christian Dior saw perfume as indispensable for a fashion house and commissioned the perfumer Paul Vacher to develop a first fragrance.
A source of inspiration to" Miss Dior " was, among other things, in Grasse, where Dior had close relatives.
Paul Vacher combined roses, jasmine and gardenias from Grasse with galbanum from Persia and contrasted them with a strong portion of oakmoss and labdanum.
For the presentation of the Dior collection, the entire fashion house on Avenue Montaigne was decorated with flowers and sprayed "Miss Dior."
In the post-war period, the green chypre - accord of "Miss Dior" was a real specialty. The aldehydes used in the composition and the green tones on a slightly animalic base were new in this combination and so completely different from the powdery-heavy perfumes that were popular at the time.
Paul Vacher had, after all, already made a name for himself with "Le Galion" (created in 1936). Dior and Vacher knew the style-defining perfume "Chypre" by Coty from 1917 and were both enthusiastic about the composition. Therefore, they created a modern chypre, younger and fresher than its model by galbanum and gardenia, a perfume for the women who had regained their freedom.
The green chypre became the olfactory reflection of the New Look: houndstooth, narrow waist, gray and white, swinging, wide skirts. Both perfume and the silhouette of Dior fashion were unmistakable, instantly recognizable.
Dior left nothing to chance.
Always fascinated by antiquity, he chose the amphora as the form for "Miss Dior", however, he was not the first fashion designer who was enthusiastic about this classic form (see Lucien Lelong 1936 or "Femme" by Rochas 1943).
The amphora recalls forms of the female body, which the couturier knew how to dress so flattering.
The name "Miss Dior" also symbolizes femininity. It was chosen as a tribute by Christian Dior to his sister Catherine, who had been a prisoner of war in Germany and opened a flower shop in Grasse after the war.
In an interview in 1955, Dior said about his first perfume:

"Like alchemists, we searched for the stone of wisdom.... and then Miss Dior was born. The perfume was inspired by evenings in Provence, where fireflies are in the sky and where the green jasmine plays the counterpart to the melody of the night and the earth. Because you know, for a perfume to remain, it must first have dwelt for a long time in the heart of those who invented it."( my translation from French).

And " Miss Dior " today?
It exists as an eau de toilette under the name " L'Originale " and I still feel the fragrance (although carefully reformulated) as perfect and beautiful!
Experiences of beauty are a gift. Only where a perfume is beautiful and not merely functional, I can feel good. With the experience of a fragrance like "Miss Dior"
experiences of the beautiful could settle in my soul.
In the world of perfume, there is always beauty to be discovered. Those who find their way from mere consumption to conscious smelling and feeling can experience a depth dimension that nourishes the soul, true to the motto of Hilde Domin : "We eat the bread, but we live on the shine."
Merci, Christian Dior !

dedicated to the sister
"Miss Dior!" exclaimed Mitzah Bricard delightedly as Catherine Dior entered the room.
She was sitting with her brother Christian in the latter's salon, and both were once again considering the name to be given to the first fragrance of the newly founded "Maison Christian Dior".
Christian, always a bit indecisive, liked to rely on the advice of his friends and so this exclamation "Miss Dior" of the always very spontaneous friend Mitzah, is said to have finally been the solution to the riddle.
"Miss Dior!"
Christian Dior was overjoyed to have his sister back with him after the years of imprisonment in the camps; also somewhat disappointed that she wanted to build her own life outside of his newly founded company.
Financially he could support her, but family man that he was, he wanted more:
At the very least, he wanted to create a fragrant memorial to his beloved sister with his first perfume.

He did even more: on the occasion of his own first fashion show on February 12, 1947, he had "Miss Dior" sprayed throughout the house on Avenue Montaigne. From the top of the stairs (where the seamstresses' rooms were located) down to the "show rooms," "Miss Dior" filled the air.
The warmth of the many people scurrying around did its part: "Miss Dior" blossomed into full scented beauty!
The journalist Carmel Snow, notorious as editor-in-chief of the US fashion magazine "Harper's Bazaar", who of course was not to be missed at the opening show, was also deeply impressed when she entered the house.
Not only the "New Look" presented there, also "Miss Dior" began on this day the triumphal procession around the world.

Through the wife of my first boss, who was employed in a well-known perfumery of West Berlin, I also got a flacon "Miss Dior" Eau de Toilette as a gift.
She was a smart woman and knew that this light fragrance variant is much more appropriate for a young woman of 21 than anything heavy and she knew my then already existing preference for the fragrance world of Christian Dior.
I love those oval flacons with the houndstooth band and am still very annoyed with myself that they went missing. Probably the old originals disappeared during the apartment clearance of my Mutti, where I had left some behind.
Also the miniature editions of all the early fragrances in this presentation can no longer be found.
Too bad, but not to change!
Why, on the other hand, I kept diary-like notes that are now a great help to me as I write remains a mystery.
But that's a good thing, and helps me to authenticity; where scent memory is now fading a bit after all.

So I young woman owned one of the most beautiful fragrances from the Christian Dior fragrance world.
He left the creation to friends - as was often the case with him; with Serge Heftler-Louiche, who had worked at Coty at the time, he later founded his first perfume company.

"Miss Dior" was a return to opulence after the war years, a firework of fragrances.
That was the way the "maître" wanted it.
Many beauties of the fragrance world were combined in this Eau de Toilette; much lighter, but no less fragrant than the "big perfume sisters".
Already alone the top note is a pure joy.
The fresh and spicy scents of bergamot and clary sage alternate with the resinous charm of galbanum. Even the picture-perfect gardenia lets itself look briefly.
Of course, the radiant, dancing aldehydes can not be missing. What would be a fragrance creature of this time without aldehydes?
A beautiful bouquet, tied from noble white-blossoming sinful-heavy jasmine, lavishly fragrant roses and noble gardenia forms the top note.
Of course, Diors beloved lily of the valley was also included; that may not be missing of course.
The classic chypre base fragrances also closes "Miss Dior" Eau de Toilette impressively.
Here they are again: rich, slightly scratchy oakmoss (not "Everybody's Darling"), sandalwood and patchouli in their lush slightly earthy beauty.
The "I" icing on the cake formed - how could it be otherwise? - a beautiful amber fireworks!
Just as Christian Dior wished it: women should shine again!

"Miss Dior" is one of those beautiful green chypre fragrances that never goes out of style or is forgotten. Or only temporarily, like it did for me back in the day!
I wore this fragrance beauty at a young age with pride, but also great self-consciousness. What extraordinary (Christian Dior) fragrances accompanied me, I was not aware of:
I smelled good and not everyday - that was enough for me vain little girl!
Only very late (but fortunately not too late) I learned to appreciate their value and wish I had been more careful with them. Then I would have, besides my diary notes, in which Christian Dior perfumes play a role, still small "fragrance samples".
Because I'm sure these fragrances will retain their charm and beauty for many decades, even if the empty flacons are locked away somewhere gathering dust.

"Miss Dior" as an eau de toilette was so beautiful that I later bought it as "Miss Dior Eau de Toilette Originale" to have at least a reminder of what I owned and yet treated quite carelessly.

One thing is certain in the meantime: Christian's sister Catherine Dior lives on in "Miss Dior" in many and younger fragrance variations; she will not be forgotten!
For her original fragrance was created by master hands and love

Miss Dior: The vintage original
Miss Dior is spectacular, it's magical, it's timeless....it is absolute fragrance perfection. For me at least. It is the epitome of all that I love about fragrance.

There is something about it that feels so well thought out, so perfected, and it doesn't even matter what vintage form you get it in. You could choose one blind folded and it's gonna be good. I have multiple forms from different time periods and I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite. I have EDT, EDP, cologne and extrait. Most of my Miss Dior is vintage but I also have Originale EDT which is very well done and smells like "Miss Dior" and I also have the Originale extrait, which is possibly the best current powdery green chypre on earth and it doesn't even have oakmoss. It smells vintage and like true Miss Dior only astonishingly potent. I have the vintage parfum also and I'm telling you, the new extrait is phenomenal. That said, there is something about the vintage cologne that is truly special. There is a softness to it yet a touch of masculinity and the fighting yin and yang of the two leaves me nearly speechless with delight.

I hate to go on and on and hype this like it's the perfume version of the Hope Diamond but it sort of is. If you like old school style, if you like powder, if you like chypre, if you like PERFUME period and haven't tried this yet it is almost an abomination.

Remembrance
This was my sister's daytime signature scent. At night she wore Shalimar. Miss Dior will always have a place in my heart because it was her scent. My sister was a petite, delicate boned, very intelligent lady with a big heart. She was earthy, passionate, compassionate, very classy, and mysterious, and both fragrances suited her personality and body chemistry, smelling wonderful on her. Though she is gone almost 27 years now, I can still smell this scent on her wedding gown from over 40 years ago. When I open the box it is stored in, I am greeted with a whoosh of spring and memories of my lovely sister. For that reason alone, I will always love this scent. It is as beautiful as she was.
