The sky above us is blue. Below us lavender, blooming, blue. As far as the eye can see. Individual oaks interrupt the endless rows. They enliven the eye with green spots. We stroll across the Plateau de Valensol. In the background the distant mountains of the Prealps. Here you can buy honey, juices, soaps, drying utensils and sleeping bags. And has exact ideas !?

Lavenda ed Ambra ORO by Gandini.

Well, this is an Italian and is composed with homegrown ingredients. Challenge to test. We feel in the middle of a draped boutique. Soap all over the place. From the bell to the counter.

With a green swampy beginning we are climbing into the next hours. Ambra ORO should soon be flattering our noses. But the heavy green lavender soap scent does not leave the place. Vanilla is also soap. Rose geranium and even Damask rose have been incorporated for us, but we can't find them. Lily of the valley where? Even Amber is soap! A little late we recognize some tension by smoke and cedar and small patchouli. With almost eternal durability everything is paradise for soap lovers and clammy purses.

We are otherwise quite taken with Gandini, especially Melograno ed Incenso has a special position. But here we were lured out from behind the stove in vain. Now that we're together. In search of a dry amber.

Light Lavender-Amber with a touch of Patchouli and what not

The Gandini colognes are quite good. I acquired a complete set of tester bottles last year and have slowly spritzed my way through a good portion of nearly all of the different varieties, including LAVANDA ED AMBRA ORO. I was reminded today of this particular creation by my testing of Serge Lutens GRIS CLAIR and ended up comparing them side-by-side.

LAVANDA ED AMBRA ORO is lighter and lacks iris, but it has its own distinctive touches as well. Above all, coriander and patchouli seem salient to my nose, though I don't want to scare anyone away because neither is all that powerful. Really this is just a skillful blend in which coriander and patchouli are embellishing the lavender and the "gold amber," which is not labdanum but ambergris--or reasonable facsimile.

What is most distinctive about this Gandini take on lavender and ambergris is that the combination ends up being super smooth and subtle and wearable even in hot weather. I recommend this fragrance for testing by anyone who likes GRIS CLAIR but also anyone who finds the powerful opening of the Lutens too difficult to suffer through.

There is no dark purple ink to endure here at all--LAVANDA ED AMBRA ORO is smooth from the opening spritz! It is labeled "cologne spray", so one might expect middling longevity and projection. In fact, the performance of this fragrance is closer to that of an eau de toilette.
