Interesting Facts

The creator of the New York luxury fragrance brand Gravel is Michael B. Knudsen. His career began in the 1950s, when he traveled from Europe to America and developed his first own collection. At that time, no one had any idea of the success that would come his way in perfume history.

The brand's fragrances are inspired by Knudsen's life, which began in Scandinavia in 1911. As a young man, he moved from Europe to America ("Gravel - Across the Ocean") to follow the promise of the American dream ("Gravel - American Dream"). There he quickly became part of the golden age of Hollywood and learned about show business, which was probably the origin of his extravagant lifestyle.

All bottles of Gravel are filled by hand and contain gravel from the Hudson River ("Hudson River NY") -an idea that came to Knudsen's mind after a walk along the river and remains a trademark to this day. Since the first bottle was sold in 1957 on 46th Street in New York ("46th Street") the perfumes have been considered unique.

Knudsen's legacy, however, goes far beyond his personal style. His pioneering spirit have influenced the American perfume industry and his creations remain unforgettable to this day. His first fragrance "Gravel - A Man's Cologne" was a huge success and is considered the first men's perfume in the U.S., as aftershaves were previously the norm.
