The Hindu God of Thunder and Rain
Indra is an ancient Vedic deity in Hinduism. He is a guardian deity in Buddhism, and the king of the highest heaven called Saudharmakalpa in Jainism. He is also an important deity worshipped in Kalasha religion, showing his prominence in ancient Hinduism. Indra’s mythology and powers are like other Indo-European deities such as Jupiter, Perun, Perkūnas, Zalmoxis, Taranis, Zeus, and Thor, suggesting a common origin in Proto-Indo-European mythology. The Hindu mythology describes Indra as fearless warrior and defender of both gods and men from evil demons. He is also the god of thunderstorms and rain.
I am not sure why they named Indra. However, I am sure it is one of the many hidden jewels, neglected, as happens for the amethyst that is found above all in the geodes that have developed in the basaltic rocks for a subsequent hydrothermal activity and close to the magmatic event. From the outside, it may look like any stone, but inside it contains precious purple quartz. We can find this perfume on the shelf among the cheapest perfumes. Just think, I bought a 100ml for only €6.90, an absurd price for an EDP. The box is beautiful, white with watercolor-like pink flowers and golden embroidery. I feel a little guilty for ignoring Indra for so long, basing my opinion on how he smells for the first few seconds. In my defence, we cannot deny it that the aldehydes at the top are on the jarring side. Once these have calmed down, however, my nose picks up a beautiful powdery green accord that reminds me a bit of baby lotion.

As soon as I spray the perfume, it reveals a strong adeidic component that recalls hair spray, the same I get from L’Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, same opening. Then I recognize the clean and sparkling smell akin to the carrot aroma that you can perceive in Chanel n° 5 Premiére. It is immediately clear that the character of this perfume is powdery and soapy, with a firm note of talc which gives a clean atmosphere. I don’t know why, but the vibe of Cabotine de Grès comes to mind, they are not at all similar or copies of one another, but that fresh, dry, soapy accord reminds me very much. If you want to know what I mean when I use the adjective soapy, then try to think of the bygone bars of soap you had in your bathroom back in the day, in vogue in the 70s and 80s, for example, Camay, Lux, Rexona and Palmolive, just to name a few that were outstanding here in Italy. It is not the classic scent of Marseille soap full of lemongrass, but something more refined, creamy, and powdery, with a slight hint of perfume. Once the astounding aldehydes settle down a bit, I get tangy bergamot and a bit of green galbanum. The initial stage is fresh.

The heart announces itself with something reminiscent of tuberose, even if they don’t mention it on the roster. Presumably, the mixture of white flowers such as lily of the valley and orange blossom along with the yellowish ylang-ylang creates such a resemblance to the divine and carnal flower. I seem to smell an amazing mix of old school men’s barber scent and a refined woman’s classic non-sweet white flower scent. Here you are in the company of yellow and waxy flowers and a feeling of joy and calm, I mean here the scent is strong, but it makes me feel good and I feel like home, the paradise of childhood, a warm and peaceful place full of billions of flowers.

In the dry down, I get a bitterness with animalic qualities, which somehow works for me. Iris is the key here, and I like Iris if it’s slightly bitter and animalic from the root. A soapy, innocent, clean powder of amber and oak moss dripped with pale white peach. Yes, a light musk cream impregnated permanently but lightly with orange blossom, jasmine, tuberose, and ylang-ylang, with some surviving green accents. Again, the final stage is clean, musky, light.

I’m a man who likes white flowers and I love Indra EDP, but I’m sure it’s not suitable for people who don’t like white flowers, jasmine and tuberose in particular. The notes of these two flowers are bold, but they are not scary. Everything is very smooth and elegant. So, all you men out there, Indra is a perfect classic old unisex type of perfume that many young people won’t like, but I think it’s gorgeous! On the package they do not write what gender it is, women or men, although the floral designs and the pink color of the cap and the sprayer could suggest a feminine perfume if you are that kind of person who associates pink to a girl and blue to a boy! I could imagine a smart-looking man without too many mindsets wearing that beauty. If you like this kind of classic, unisex perfumes, rich in non-sweet white flowers, you can dare to wear this perfume. There are lots of aldehydes then lovely spring flowers. Very light, crisp, strong and pretty. The background has a nice woodsy touch. So, Indra goes into the category of my guilty pleasure. The sillage changes on me, the vibration of soap and talc moves in and out. The projection is great; it spreads in and out during use. I enjoy this in my private time, a few spays on the pillow before going to bed. I can’t stop to sniff it. It is my obsession now. This is a perfect work scent, non-offensive and very suitable for open spaces, not for a night at the opera, but it is a good perfume for a day in informal situations. Best for middle seasons, Fall and Spring are ideal. It is big, 100ml and the truth is that it is quite pleasant, it is not cloying at all. The tastes in perfumeries are too personal so the truth is that it is difficult to give an opinion about it, at least this are my two cents.

This review bases upon a 100ml (3.4 fl. oz) I own since October 2020.

Humble bottle, but wonderful scent
I usually like the fragrances by Ulric de Varens: although they are often underrateted for their quite weak sillage and the "spartan" or a little kitsch bottles and packagings and the low price, They can reserve very good surprises.
This fragrance is a clear example. How many times I saw this simple bottle on the shelves of the drugstore where I usually buy my scents ...and I never tested it thinking it could be of bad quality. I was wrong!
The day I decided to spray this fragrance I discovered a teneder, flowery and very warm and feminine bouquet made more interesting by a clove touch. Indra is a soft pink cloud involving you and , although the sillage isn't so strong, its notes accompains you for a few hours with a very "clean " and quite "powdery" result.
On my skin I perceive mainly the clove and a soft orange blososm touch, not too vibrant, but well balanced and very pleasant. Maybe the only problem is there's no base and theb scent is quite light , but if you use it by day, maybe in springtime and when you go to the office or the school, it's the perfect discrete perfume .
Don't look at the very simple bottle with a not so elegant plastic pink cap, but mind that you'll have a 100ml size for about 8€. You can find the UdV fragrances on the French site too.
If you are a romantic, tender or "rétro" soul and you like historical low cost fragrances such as Vanderbilt or similar,Indra could be your cup of tea. Why don't you try?
