In the morning at half past five in Munich...

When I recently stood in a noble department store in Milan and inspected the wonderful perfumery, I came across a Kilian stand for the first time in my life
Directly a story flew into my memory, which I had experienced about 2 years ago in a Technoclub in Munich:

So I went to the lady representing Kilian and told her about my encounter with a guy, in the middle of the crowded dance floor, between naked, sweaty bodies, fog, smoke, a lot of scene typical substances and a lot of alcohol.

At this time of day and in this state, one is rarely interested in anything other than the basses of the currently playing DJ.
Nevertheless... just at that moment, a guy squeezes through the hedonistic crowd. He is still dressed and wears a coat, because he has obviously just entered the club from the cold of the night.
My nose sniffs out the scent and I try to filter it out from which direction it comes When I discover the guy, I grab him by the coat in the middle of the noise and try to put my question somehow in words...
What exactly I stammered, I never really know. But he grins at me and just says "Kilian" and disappears into the crowd.

The saleswoman laughs and says: "Now we have a difficult task.
By a rough description we test 5 fragrances and at number 5 my eyes get big, because I have a direct flashback to the experienced situation in Munich...
Like it happened yesterday!
The saleswoman understands immediately and smiles at me agreeing.

The mixture of musk, oud, patch, incense but also fresher contents make this fragrance unique and super interesting.

It smells noble, but not detached.
Male, but not The Rock-like masculine.
Mysterious, but not to cemetery.
Sweet, but not cotton candy like at the fair.

For me a brilliant fragrance!

Alpha of the series

Alright. I gave this a couple of wearings.

Before I review it I have a few remarks,
If this is the Arabian Nights finale, then well done. Bravo.
Kilian has managed to seal an excellent series with a perfume that captures every shining aspect of each perfume from the line.

Which brings me to my next point.

The name is a misnomer. But this time it's a good thing.
Meaning there is musk but it's not a musk dominant perfume.
Rose Oud is rose and oud dominant, Pure Oud is oud dominant, Amber Oud is amber am oud dominant
Musk Oud is the alpha of the series. It's comprised of the star accord from each perfume.
It's got the incense from Incense Oud, the soft boozy rose from Rose Oud, the stellar quality oud in Pure Oud and the cardamom from Extreme Oud.

Add an oily delicious musk and you have Musk Oud.

If you were to only have one from the Arabian Series, this would be it.

You should get this, then get the other flavors that appeal to you (amber / Amber Oud, Rose / Rose Oud, leather / Black Oud etc etc).

This not only represents the complexity and quality that stands behind the Arabian Series (I'd have liked to say the Kilian line, but the generic waste that's seen spewing lately forbids it) but it is the most representative of all.

This is akin to 34 Saint Germain Boulevard, the flagship creation. Muscle flexing if you will.
Like a chameloen constantly changing pigmentation of smell.

One minute it's an aromatic coriander , crisp cypress, the next it's cardamom ansd cypress.

Then it's rose oud, then a boozy incense.

Allllll of the above sitting on musk. The musk isn't pronounced at all. Neither is the rose. Nothing blatantly stands out.

The epitome of complexity. An ever changing complexity.

Notes and accords ricocheting back and fourth but in utter harmoy. A complex chameleon of a scent.

If this is the Arabian Nights finale, then this is the expected climatic ending bringing together the best of all of the series.

Ultimate clean oud.

Longevity of 7.5, sillage of 7.1? What! There's no way in hell Musk Oud hasn't been reformulated *heavily* at some point. I've got an older refill bottle (doesn't have a batch code, so don't know the year) and this stuff projects and lasts like there is no tomorrow! Mind you, my daily drivers include names like Ombre Nomade, Terroni, Oud Satin Mood, and alike, and Musk Oud stands its ground even next to those nuclear bombs.

In terms of the scent profile, Musk Oud is very clean, metallic, and polished. Has a gasoline-like undertone. No skank in here at all - yet this is undoubtedly an oud fragrance. While dark and mysterious, Musk Oud also has airy qualities to it and is totally wearable during the daytime. All in all, a very unique creation, not your typical rose-oud scent.

Is The Final Addition To The Arabian Series Worthy?...

Musk Oud opens with just a twist of fresh lemon juice before hints of the Oud in the base peek through. As the fragrance enters the early heart, the lemon disappears, now replaced by a mildly spiced soft airy rose that takes on the starring role with the now slightly more assertive Oud in support as radiant, almost honeyed incense and relatively sanitized patchouli are also detectable. During the late dry-down the slightly rubbery Oud and rose both remain though largely diminished, as relatively clean Musk from the base emerges and takes over the starring role while lacking most of the animalic facets one might expect. Projection is below average and longevity is average at 7-8 hours on skin.

Musk Oud was not really the fragrance I expected based on its name. I thought musk and Oud would play co-stars throughout, but instead I got more rose and incense than musk until the last two hours or so of development. In fact, the Oud note that is certainly there (though quite possibly derived from a high quality synthetic) never really plays the star throughout, ceding the role primarily to the rose which is much more prominent in the key heart phase. The fragrance always stays relatively light, surprisingly clean to a large degree and rather easy to wear at all times. I like Musk Oud quite a bit but while I have not worn one of its sister scents, Rose Oud in quite a while I get a feeling Musk Oud smells similar during the heart phase, probably due to both having a similar smelling rose. The bottom line is the relatively expensive Musk Oud at $395 a 50ml bottle is a worthy addition to close out the By Kilian's Arabian Series, but it errs to a degree in its over-familiarity and by focusing too much on rose and not enough on its two supposed co-stars, earning a "very good" to "excellent" rating of 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5.

Musc oud or not musc oud?

I discovered this perfume at Printemps Boulevard Haussmann in Paris.

it is a more feminine perfume, even if I can be considered unisex. we clearly feel a mixture of musk and rose very similar to randal de al rehab at 2 euros.

but nevertheless more accessible in price to pay since it is a 50ml bottle. it is more expensive at the price per litre. it remains a good compromise to have a luxury perfume that is difficult to access cheaper than louis vuitton.

for those who are looking for the same accessible there is the brand al rehab.
