Old school and very pretty.
This is an old bottle of edt, so most likely the top notes have faded. A soft and gentle floral iris/amber fragrance, with powdery orris tones. Old school and smooth perfumery. This one is soft and delicate but not overly girly. The flowers are real, you can almost smell the edgy sap. It is like a vase of white lilies in a bathroom so you can smell the soap. Soft and diaphanous. Pretty, delicate and inoffensive.
It would be interesting to smell the parfum concentration of this.

A forgotten favourite
I was randomly choosing a mini to wear and my eyes fell upon Joop edp. I had forgotten how nice this perfume was. A classic powerhouse of the late 80's. A tiny dab produced a powerful burst of aldehydic neroli citrus and rosy florals rapidly backed up by the solidarity of that familiar sandalwood/civet/musk/patch/amber that was the main backbone of many of those 80's frags. There is a tonka sweetness too that nicely rounds this perfume and stops it being too jasmine floral. I would place this in the sweetish amber zone. There is a hint of spiciness that keeps it interesting and then the lovely soft drydown of a powdery amber style fading right down to a mere soapy trace. One of those neck nuzzlers for later. The civet isn't scary in this, just a balanced ingredient. However, this needs an extremely light hand upon application. A tiny drop on one hand and that is plenty to smell. This is the sort of perfume that forms those huge wafts of lingering fragrance long after the owner has passed by. An 80's style generous application would be sickly overkill. An all round well constructed fragrance with a superb longevity. Guerlain lovers may like to try this as it has that type of soft, sweetish, guerlainesque shalimar woody tonka-ism.

The grande dame
A soft veil of well balanced almost powdery fresh floral harmony. This is the opening of elegant old school perfumery at its best but it retains a very individual herbal character that almost reminds one of violet leaves, even though they are not listed on the notes. Into a few moments of wearing, a small edge of the herbal side suddenly sits up as if alarmed, nearly too sharp and a little too harsh, but it doesn't last long. The perfume sits back down, and smooths down the ruffled flowers and woods, the crisis over, relaxing gently into a soft, woodsy, jasmine, floral with a spicy edge like a carnation just to prevent any over comfortable complacency. The herbs remain just enough to keep the florals sitting in polite check. It then dries down into a gentle, herby almost powdery, musky, woodsy, spicy, floral. No one note overpowering the rest. Gentle, peaceful and very sophisticated. A tiny hint of a very playful musky note that just smoulders beneath soft amber. The well behaved side keeps this perfume in order. The rest is just hinting at what could be underneath but of course polite girls just don't go there. It might be an older dame, who still has the beauty and the elegance. Her hair immaculately coiffured. Her suit worn and comfortable but still smart. A mere hint at her racy past betrayed in the laughter lines. As the light fades, she leaves, and there is just a hint of her presence and without her there, you now notice that her room is a little dusty with the daffodils fading in the vase.

This is an older bottle of edt I am testing.

Crisp but soft, fresh but earthy, cool but warm. Contrasts in a bottle that work.
I'm not normally compelled to write reviews but this fragrance made me sit up. What an unusual combination of irissy, incense and earthy but clean vibes. I really like this. Some usual ingredients have been combined in a very unusual way. It has really worked well to produce a cool, crisp fragrance that is fresh but doesn't belong in the normal citrus department, but more in the clean laundry room. Then just as you think it might be too clean, then the labdanum and the iris bring out their more earthy natures and bring this back to a really lovely and unusual skin scent. Not overpowering at all, just perfect. Nice for the office, a meeting or a formal do. No stinker here. I can see this with a very crisp suit or jeans and a fresh white ironed shirt. A yes from me. It would be advisable to take out a top up bottle with you, but worth topping up.
