Coumarin is a fragrance ingredient which cn be found in several plants, i.e. tonka bean and woodruff. Coumarin and related ingredients are said to be part of the typical smell of hay.

Coumarin was first synthetically processed in 1868, a precondition for its wider use in perfumery.

First of all, it became a major ingredient in Paul Parquet's "Fougère Royale" (1882) which gave its name to a whole group of perfumes.

According to EU regulations, coumarin has to be declared on the package if contained in a perfume.
