I want to start and I'm so surprised that I really don't have the words! Sometimes life (or the wonderful people in it) leads us to unusual places that were previously reserved for us, but which - how could it be any different - can still be remembered by their smell despite a short stay, carve themselves into their own wood, become part of one, in connection with the memory of this person. I was fourteen or fifteen, and an old building door opened! She took me to the violin maker (as a child I thought of a farm with loud violins in the stable), on the way we listened to the radio in a dark green Ford Fiesta and she let me guess the composers. All this time, immersing yourself in the scent of wood, colophony dust against the light, wood coming to life. She just wanted to do a little something there. But this smell of resin, any tincture, which should stink, but enchanted me with all its amber tones. So is this perfume. It smells as if I was breathing warmly on the wood of my cello or as if the sun was filling its own odour in the room. At that time it was a violin maker, but after a few minutes this perfume develops into a gentle, amber-like perfume, the incense made me almost devout, no, it must be my own violin maker, too round, too feminine (although quite wearable for a man!). A wonderful composition, how fitting that I am unpacking my cello again just these days and its gentle resinous smell rises to my nose again, my dear good old and faithful friend. This amber scent makes me dream, so much happens so unbelievably, suddenly and unexpectedly. My God, I'm so glad there is such a thing

The soul with polar white

Sadness, everyone knows that, hangs like a lump in the wintery, crystal-clear air.
Dying for love is easy, but waking from sorrow is difficult.
I would like to tell you something else, but your soul is painted with polar white.
Allows no color or joy.

Smooth, white, delicately embedded with shallow incense that comes across as bright as if it were blinding me. Everything seems still and clear in this world when you apply this fragrance. Pine needles dancing in the cold wind, surrounded by a sweet note of tonka bean and cinnamon. The mind also grinds a little vanilla. Warm rum draws into the cold body. I could sink into sleep like a bear, but I'd rather leave the snowflakes outside. A silky core of sandalwood gently envelops me, firmly enclosed in a sea of musky clouds. Resin drips down from the sky as if in slow motion. They were golden tears, I was told. Everything and really at every moment there is this bright incense that feels so smooth and silky, as if you were drawing cold water through your fingers. Over and over again. So smooth and yet so beautiful. Polar white, in fact.

And so I sail on, along the white paths of paper...
I let my thoughts drift on clouds, awaiting the first snow...

A Welcome Spicy, Woody , Resinous Blast From The Past...

Reve d'Ossian opens with a gentle touch of aldehydes before a gingery incense-like opoponax resin and elemi-derived pine tandem takes over. In the early heart the incense-like opoponax resin remains, now supported with cinnamon spice and slightly sweet natural smelling woods with a prominent tonka bean driven sweet powdery sheen covering all. During the late dry-down the tonka bean driven powder fades though never completely dissipates as slightly sweet amber, relatively clean musk and fine sandalwood from the base emerge and control, with the just slightly sweet sandalwood primarily "the last man standing" as the composition slowly fades out with traces of the supporting musk still barely detectable. Projection is very good and longevity is excellent to outstanding at 12-14 hours on skin.

Reve d'Ossian has an amazing list of notes, but one of the most impressive early-on is its deft use of aldehydes up top. Usually the use of aldehydes in a composition is an arresting point for this reviewer, but they go down quite easy with this one, meshing quite well with the opoponax resin that resembles radiant church incense. The tonka bean gets just a tad problematic in the heart as it brings a pretty decent amount of sweet powder along for the ride, but thankfully while it goes right to the boundary of acceptability; it never crosses the line into unwanted territory. The sandalwood and amber base is quite lovely and finishes off the composition on a high note. The bottom line is the 120 euro per 100ml bottle Reve d'Ossian is far from perfect, but it gets things mostly right (especially the top and base accords), earning a well-deserved "very good" rating of 3.5 stars out of 5.

A cathedral in a bottle

It smells, literally, of ecclesiastical incense, of the Easter procession, and I love it for that, but, I would like much more, if the beginning were projected in time and was the scent of the whole life of perfume, but no, I I have to make do with a first half hour of precious, leaden, rough cathedral incense and even a bit acid, a very beautiful thing, which makes it want to never end. After this beginning, the incense continues to play a leading role, but it gradually loses that religious tone, until it shows us a more common incense, much more woody and resinous, a precious aroma as well, but which loses that extra spark it had at the beginning. In the end, the aroma is a super soft sandalwood incense with very resinous and beautiful nuances, but already very close to the skin, with an almost residual effect.

It is not a powerful perfume, on the contrary, it is a perfume that encourages calm, peace and relaxation, a deep spiritual aroma, but simple and fresh at the same time. If I had to give an example so that you can interpret it better, I would say that it is as if we had added lead tones to Montale's Full Incense and a more solemn and serious character.

The overall performance is moderate, the duration is fine, remaining on the skin for 7 hours without problems, but the projection is quite moderate or discreet, which is quite common in this type of flavor.

It is a perfume that could be used at any time of the day, and in any situation, but yes, it is not perfume for all noses, you have to really like incense in its most religious aspect.

Dreams of Ossian

After trying all the samples of the Oriza L. Legrand sample pack I ordered, I can definitely say that this and Horizon are my favorite offerings from this house, although all compositions have a certain "je ne sais quoi" attractiveness. They all share a complex, and out of this world or at least out of this current age we live in, quality. And you can almost see and smell the story they have for each of their fragrances. I recommend to at least try the sample pack. They ship quickly, pack well and it's well worth the € 15,- or € 16,-.

Back to Rêve d'Ossian. It starts off with a nice combo of incense and aldehydes, but it's never harsh or pungent anywhere. After the first blast it settles down into a nice powdery, sweetish and balmy mixture of pine, elemi, woods, opoponax and tonka.

Rêve d'Ossian brings you into the elusive deep forest where maybe even fairies hide behind the trees. If the forest was a temple or a church, then this would be its fragrance.
