The company was founded in 1871 as "A. Goetting & Company'' in New York at the address "264 Spring Street" and produced perfumes that were sold through retailers. The founder was Adolph H. Goetting, a chemist and perfumer born in Germany in 1851, who also included household articles in his portfolio.
In 1896, David H. McConnell, founder of the "California Perfume Company" and later "Avon Products Inc.", took over "A. Goetting & Company" and hired Adolph H. Goetting as chief chemist of his ''California Perfume Company". McConnell continued to operate Goetting's company under the name "Goetting & Co." until at least 1918 and served two distribution channels for similar product ranges with the door-to-door sales of the "California Perfume Company" and the retail sales of "Goetting & Co." products.
