Interesting Facts

Maître Parfumeur et Gantier is not only a perfume house, but also has its own collection of fine gloves (French: gants). The combination of these two crafts can be seen as a bridge to the past, to the roots of today's perfumery art: gloves were originally perfumed to mask the smell of tanning.

Charles VIII (French king of the 15th century) is said to have received gloves perfumed with violets. Documents of the 17th century document the trade of gloves perfumed with aromatic oils, musk, amber and civet by Parisian "gantiers parfumeurs". The perfume house Rancé 1795 had also been producing perfumed gloves for the French aristocracy in Grasse for two centuries before focusing on perfumes and becoming Napoleon's court supplier.

In the early 17th century, the French king awarded the title of "Maître Gantier Parfumeur" to those who had mastered the tradition of perfuming gloves to perfection. Maître Parfumeur et Gantier is committed to this tradition.

The house was founded in 1989 by Jean Laporte, who in a way "invented" the niche with L' Artisan Parfumeur in 1976: L' Artisan Parfumeur was the first internationally successful perfume brand that consciously and emphatically went its own, explicitly artistic way apart from the big brands and built the company profile on it.

Jean-Paul Millet Lage took over the brand from its founder Jean Laporte... and also his craft: he was an apprentice for 4 years, then co-creator. Millet Lage learned perfumery after his former career as a banker to the point where he wanted to pursue his own vision. When Jean Laporte left the brand in 1997, he took it over as sole boss full of idealism and commitment. His own artistic path is shaped by what he learned from his teacher: consistent and individual olfactory art without regard for the market or short-lived trends - and with a return to the French craft of perfumery.
