Warm, sensual and natural
Sandalwood is known to be one of the most popular base notes and also one of the rarest raw materials. As the name suggests, Aaron Terence Hughes has used it here as a central note, highlighting various facets and in some cases adding other fragrances. Even if there are no top notes in Santal Extreme, I would still speak of three overlapping phases.

Right at the beginning I thought to myself: This reminds me partly of Diptiques Tam Dao (EdP), but seems fuller and more interesting. The two types of sandalwood - at least that's what the perfumer says - are supposed to be rather balsamic on the one hand and rather woody on the other hand and thus complement each other particularly well. I would definitely also speak of a symbiosis of warmth and dryness. Due to the vanilla and tonka bean tincture, the fragrance also has a sensual, slightly sweet, but never intrusive or even gourmand side. I cannot perceive the rose at all; cedar wood certainly contributes something to the dryness and patchouli can be filtered out more clearly, especially directly on the skin, and has a slightly earthy, dirty side - comparable to Jovoys Psychédelique.

After about two to three hours the scent changes a bit, because now an animal facet is added, which reminds me of the smell of old leather. Here again: On the skin I can smell them clearly, but only discreetly in the air. After a good eight hours Santal Extreme becomes softer again, which is certainly due to the musk compounds. All in all, ATH really delivers what it promises here: a long-lasting and quite complex sandalwood scent that looks very natural.

My rating would probably have been a little higher, if it weren't for this animalistic facet, of which I am basically not a fan. I also recognize some notes/chords from already tested songs. However, Santal Extreme should be on the watch list for anyone looking for a good sandalwood perfume.
