Koh Kong full spectrum with Red Kinam facets
Once you smell Koh Kong oud oil, you'll realize why it used to be so sought after in the past and still is much loved today by oud heads. It is the most satisfying, delicious oud I can think of while offering plenty more in the base. Depending on how the wood is distilled, and its grade, they can go all over the place, but they all have this Crassna-like fruity quality that is so addictive. From what I've tried, Koh Kong 4K is the apex oud oil from this region. It is a new gen oil, so you get none of the funky or smoky facets here, but it doesn't feel all top notes or skim, as some of these oils might come across. You get a full spectrum flavor, as clean as spring water, with the most delicious Koh Kong buffet served on a dusty, old wood rug, smooth as silk. The opening is sweet, honeyed, sprinkled generously with cinnamon, and a surprising bitter-green, almost mentholated note. It flows into the characteristic red fruit infusion, which smells like strawberries mixed with hot milk to me. I believe the milky quality is given by a floral accord that creeps into the mid-phase of the oil, and it does suggest a yogurt, milk-like texture. It smells so good you almost want to bite your arm off. It stays here for a long time, a nature's gourmand treat only to morph into a more oleoresinous and woody chord in the later stages. A clean, dusty wood, with an almost ozonic quality, and the returning green-bitter mentholated chord which to me, is something I always find in high and very high-grade oils. It sometimes feels ozonic, like laying on the jungle floor gazing at the sky above. It progresses vertically and the color spectrum is red, golden, and green, with shades of blue, brown, and white. I could name a few other oils from this region that are almost as good, but I find none to offer this full spectrum and overall consistency from start to finish. It is easy to see why it was so loved when it came out and sought after today.
