An oriental journey of exotic fragrances !

The very fancy presentation of Barq by Al Haramain suggests that you're in for something unusual, and indeed you are!

Barq is a fanciful journey through spicy, fruity, sweet, flowery lands, designed to intrigue and capture you with their delightful aromas... to seduce you... to hold you in their thrall.

Opening with a long, lingering kiss of sweetness, Barq then presents its treasure chest of eastern flavours to trap you and keep your attention. The drydown is musky, very slightly powdery, mildly woody, as the perfume bids you a fond goodbye till the next time. This Eastern perfume contains alcohol.

Beautiful, perfect for evening and night.

Overwhelming Sweetness

Finally, I can test Barq, which already has been passed around for a while among parfumo users. Thank you, AbuSafiyya, for the sample!

Thanks to Taiba Shop - a small arabic shop in Bonn/Germany - I already have gained a slight overview about perfumes from arabia - and yes, also Barq is typically arab! But Barq is not at all a strong Oud-scent as you might expect. Somehow, in western countries, many people seem to think that this fungus-infected wood is all that arab perfumery is about.

No, Barq is an arab style musk scent! If at all, you find oud only at the fringe of it.

Barq starts with unbelievable sweetness, its fruity note has a really syrupy texture. The harvest of a whole date plantation seems to have gone into it, with lots of sugar added. Do you know these little wooden boxes, packed with dried, overly sweet dates? Never eat a whole box of it at once! This is really unusual, and I feel almost intimidated by it. This sweetness causes pyrosis!

Another user on parfumo described Barq as a little fruity and smoky, but I am in doubt if we really tested the same perfume. Maybe, at Al Haramain, they do not always provide then same quality of a scent? Do the batches differ from each other?

Behind the sticky sweetness, there comes the musk. However, it cannot keep up with it. The musk is supported by some kind of darker note - rather Amber than Oud - but by far not strong enough to be a counterpart to the exuberant sweetness. The only way to bear this scent is not to smell it directly on the skin where you applied it. But also if I only smell the projection, I am not very fond of this sweet cloud.

No, a perfume like this would not be successful on the eurpean market and in many other places. Maybe, it could be sold in a supermarket, as a cheap scent for little girls, rather a toy than a perfume.

Sweet musk scents seem to be a specific class in arab perfumery. In my opinion, a good perfume of this kind should have sufficient contrastive notes - may it be oud, or smoky amber, or herbal notes. A good recommondation fur such perfumes are the perfume oils Tagreed and Atheer, both from the saudi-arab company Al Rehab. There, the extreme sweetness is not annoying to me - just because there is enough other, different stuff in it.
