The city buried in the sand
Ubar was a city in the Arabian Peninsula, in the region of Oman.
Even today there are archaeological remains of this city, also known as the city of a thousand pillars.
The city became an important center of trading wealth due to the exchange of goods and valuable materials found in it.
Legend has it that Allah, angry with its inhabitants for their lascivious and dissolute behavior, struck the city with a curse and buried it forever in the desert sands.
What remains of Ubar today is an important archaeological center, discovered only in 1992, where you can find the path of the caravans that traveled the magnificent incense route
Amouage produced a perfume in 1995 that embodied the smell of this city, a kind of inspiration for the raw materials that were grown in this city, as well as the magnificent Omani frankincense.
The little-known 1995 version had a slightly different formula than the current one, being woodier, more incense-rich, and literally smelling like hot sand.
The perfume remained on the market for a few years before being discontinued.
In 2009, when Amouage went through a period of great hype and recognition around the world (under the leadership of the great Christopher Chong) . The perfume was remade and then marketed with a different bottle. The fragrance "new" also takes a slightly different smell, it is much more floral and less woody than the original.
This is one of the most complex compositions in the history of Amouage, Those who like simple, straightforward and delicate fragrances will not appreciate this.
In Ubar there is a complexity and layering of notes that have disappeared in recent fragrances.
Is a framework inspired by the great masterpieces of vintage perfumery. Ubar is much more than a "simple" chypre, it is also an oriental floral, a woody fragrance, a monster of infinite beauty, ready to scratch you and enchant you with her seductive allure.
Ubar opening sounds like the breath of Allah, who buried the city under the sand with his curse.
In the first opening phase of Ubar, a note of green, leathery and rough violet is clearly perceptible, accompanied by citrus notes of bitter orange and tangerine.
Immediately after, a powerful lily of the valley emerges, dry and acidic, opening a floral dance of fleshy ylang ylang and jasmine.
The floral heart becomes roaring with a constant battle between the white component (jasmine and tuberose) and a fleshy, round, rich and disruptive ylang ylang.
After about 2 hours, the middle phase allows the base notes to emerge. It is a very strong and complex base, whose outstanding element is the copaiba balsam, which gives the perfume a warm, robust and honeyed note (it rounds out the fragrance even more, together with a tentative hint of vanilla).
Next to the copaiba balsam, the patchouli is clearly perceptible: a "purified" patchouli, fractionated, so to speak, the earthy note is absent and the natural green patchouli note emerges.
The patchouli is accompanied by a beautiful warm and slightly animalic, almost musky amber note, which is rounded off by the note of Mysore sandalwood and oakmoss.
Overall, the perfume has several phases in which the individual notes are not always perceptible, The overall fragrance that is perceived is a floral, musky, amber and woody, a kind of coat of cashmere and flowers with leather applications :)
The fragrance is a work of art of rare beauty, its duration exceeds 6/7 hours.
Its ideal season is spring and summer; at low temperatures, unfortunately, its floral heart does not unfold as it should, and the fragrance fades ( on my skin).
It has slight similarities to Knowing by Estee Lauder (although Ubar is much more floral), Diva by Ungaro and 1000 by Patou (resembles 1000 by Patou in the dry, chypres phase of the fragrance).
It remains a timeless masterpiece, one of the most beautiful, original and artistic perfumes of Amouage.
The review refers to the 2009 version (bottle without magnetic cap).

Magical
This fragrance is named after the city of Ubar in southern Oman, which was inhabited between 2,700 and 300 BC. Ubar was a beautiful, rich trading city that sank into the sand and disappeared into the desert...
Ubar is one of the most magical scents I have ever tasted. Magical, timeless, enchanting. Dense, strong, with excellent projection, at once theatrical and mystical.... It starts with a little citrus, orange, mandarin, then comes ylang ylang, white flowers with accented jasmine and develops patchouli and vanilla in the base notes. Very strong and very durable on the skin, +12 hours, and on clothes it lasts for days. Flacon looks precious and noble.
Maybe a little too intense for summer and heat, perfect for other seasons like autumn and winter. Very chic, elegant and very feminine!

A Nostalgic Floral Perfume
Amouage UBAR hits me immediately as a nolstagic perfume along the lines of Jean-Charles Brosseau L'OMBRE ROSE. There is a dry dustiness to the florals here which gives the composition a "vintage" feeling. In contrast to L'OMBRE ROSE, UBAR does not develop significantly to a soapy baby powder drydown. Instead, UBAR becomes somehow more floral, magnifying the dusty roses and, to my nose, lily (not lily of the valley). I realize that lily is not listed, but that is what I smell. It could be the effect of the civet thrown into the mix.

UBAR has great longevity and big sillage, but this really is not oriental at all. I like UBAR a lot as a floral perfume, but I also feel that L'OMBRE ROSE satisfies the same pangs of nostalgia as the former, so I won't be adding UBAR to my collection anytime soon. I commend L'OMBRE ROSE to the attention of anyone who likes UBAR but cannot afford such an extravagance...

bravo
Look at the cast of any of the Bravo housewives at a post-season reunion. Consider the degree of wardrobe, hair, make-up and custom-spanx before your eyes. What is the difference between this execution of gender and drag? Physiological sex distinctions seem minor. The issue is the extremity of the presentation.  If what you see on those reunion shows isn't drag, I'm not sure what is.

Smack in the center of the above gender question lies Ubar. Again, the issue is the extremity of the presentation. Ubar doesn't care a whit about what your crotch might hide. Ubar is all eyelashes, nails and bling. Drag or television-femininity, the similarity is hypergender and the differences are unimportant.

(Is it me, or does Andy Cohen not come off like a court eunuch sitting in the midst of all that regalia?)

Floral Animalic Bombshell
Ubar is an animalic bombshell fragrance. Positively swoon worthy. Actually this wears fairly linearly on me, its mostly civet, ambergris, jasmine, ylang ylang and sandalwood from beginning to end. But oh, what a stunning accord this creates! Rich, floral, vintage and smooth with an overtly sensual vibe, though at times I also catch a whiff of what smells like a plush nag champa note to me. I agree with those who have said Ubar will lend the wear an aura of mystery.

As I wear Ubar, I notice that it bares a striking resemblance to Samsara. No this is not a dupe, but it is clearly of the same family---built off the same core of jasmine, ylang ylang and sandalwood. If you like one you are rather likely to like the other, though Samsara has a large dose of vanilla in the drydown and Ubar has way more animalic notes going on.

Actually the more I think about it Ubar is the half way point between Jean Patou's symphonic animalic floral, Joy, and Guerlain's Samsara.

This is a powerhouse, even dabbing a small amount produces a huge cloud of scent and sillage. Do not overspray. Less is more with this one. Prepare to turn heads.

A ride through the desert. Do I smell sand? Yes. And flowers? Yes - though not sweet and more like layered spices. One of the most unique...
