Floral Green Beast!
Imperial Garden was launched in 1973. The listed notes are simply "floral" and "mate."
I recently acquired a vintage eau de cologne of Imperial Garden, and although I cannot identify individual notes, I can confirm that it is a very green, very fresh, and for a cologne, an extremely strong fragrance. This cologne is as strong as any EdP I have ever smelt in my life, and I would even go so far as to say it is easily as strong as most extraits! I am not sure how old is my bottle, but I guesstimate it dates back at least to the 1980s or early 1990s. I am not sure whence this was discontinued or if it was brought back for limited runs or not. My bottle is the classic oriental styled white bottle with a floral spray across the front. The box is obviously a Christmas styled box designed to appeal as a Christmas gift.
Along with "floral notes" (not individually specified) one of the listed notes in Imperial Garden is mate. I am unfamiliar with mate, but I would confidently hazard a good guess that I must be picking up on a strong mate note. I do not know how to describe it other than green, fresh, and floral. I cannot identify the floral notes, though. I wish I could do!
The ratings below are based in part on the fact that whilst this is an EdC, it performs as well as the best EdPs I have tried, and even as well as most extraits. I am really amazed. Given the packaging, one would think this must me categorised as an Oriental or Floriental, but I would categorise it as a Green or a Floral Green, or a Floral Green Aromatic. The longevity, projection, and sillage with one spray is amazing! Admittedly, one spray released a lot more fragrance than I expected, but one spray is enough to be smelt from two or three rooms away easily! I have heard the phrase "beast mode" applied to fragrances, and now I think I know what is meant by this epithet! I am confident if I do not wash off this fragrance before bedtime later tonight, I will be able to smell it on myself quite clearly in the morning. If you like strong, green, floral notes, and/or if you like "mate," then I suggest you try this fragrance. The performance is outstanding given the price point. I am not often stunned by a fragrance, but this EdC has really caught me totally off guard as I expected a fairly gentle floral fragrance with soft projection and sillage. I expected it would become a skin scent within a couple of hours. I could not have been more wrong on all accounts.
Overall fragrance: 5/10
Longevity: 9.5/10
Projection: 9.5/10
Sillage: 9.5/10
