Fresh and Sweet Cherry Blossoms
Parfums Berdoues FLEURS DE CERISIER, a part of Les Contes Bucoliques series of quasi-soliflores recently launched by this house, is a natural-smelling cherry blossom eau de toilette. It smells much better than Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria rendition of this flower. That's pretty faint praise, of course, since the Guerlain is some sort of chemical soup.
I've been trying to figure out what the story with the house of Berdoues is, and based on my sample set of Les Contes Bucoliques, I'd say that this old French house is now producing simple perfumes on a slightly higher level (but not much) than Bath & Body Works and The Body Shop. In a side-by-side comparison, I find that The Body Shop JAPANESE CHERRY BLOSSOM is more soapy, a bit spicy, and less sweet than this Berdoues rendition. Neither is anything like the best-selling Bath & Body Works JAPANESE CHERRY BLOSSOM, which has a marked creamy rice-like facet and a muskiness which works on some people's skins (and according to their noses) and not on others.
No such complex problems arise in the case of Parfums Berdoues FLEURS DE CERISIER (plural, according to my manufacturer's card), because this is a very simple cherry blossom fragrance with enough sweetness thrown into the mix to toe the line between floral and fruity-floral perfumes. The composition is light and warm-weather ready, with medium sillage and medium longevity. I find this to be a decent rendition of cherry blossoms, no more and no less.
