Just as I'm getting into it, it's gone.
It opens with candied violets that aren't too powdery. There is a fruitiness that is sometimes dominant in the opening and sometimes it a bit more in the background.

The heart is a mixed floral bouquet with musk. The violet is the dominant floral in the bouquet with some iris and lily behind it. There's a tad of sandalwood in there too.

The drydown has more sandalwood and musk. It's a clean musk. I like it.

It has moderate sillage but it fades quickly. It only lasts about 2 hours on me.

Candied Violets
Some years ago I was hunting for a violet candy scent . Everything about those tiny purple chrystalized flowers is just so lovely: the way they look, their strange grassy perfumey taste and of course their wonderful scent, at once sweet, flowery, green and cool.

Violettes de Toulouse is basically this candy bottled, with some musk and buttery iris thrown into the mix. It is indeed a very tame perfume, more of an airy whisper than an assertive statement. Adorable albeit regrettably shortlived. Spraying on fabric will probably work better than applying directly to the skin. And call me infantile, but I'm in love with the box and the bottle. They look straight out of my great grandmother's boudoir.

Nineteenth-Century Violets--still beautiful today
There are several excellent violet soliflores available, and I find many of them very similar to one another, particularly those which date back to the nineteenth century. It seems to me that if you like one of them you'll like all of them, including this one, Berdoues VIOLETTES DE TOULOUSE edt. My bottle claims to contain the original composition, and I do believe that it does.

I love natural-smelling violets, and that is what this is, essentially. Comparing this Berdoues offering with Borsari VIOLETTA DI PARMA or Molinard VIOLETTE or Christian Celle CALYPSO VIOLETTE or L'Artisan Parfumeur VERTE VIOLETTE, I have a tough time deciding which one I like the best--because I love them all! The drydowns end up being very similar, though they all start out a bit different. Some are a bit more sweet or a bit more green, but violet is the focus in all.

Of the soliflores familiar to me, VIOLETTES DE TOULOUSE edt smells closest to--indeed, nearly indistinguishable from--VIOLETTA DI PARMA edp, both of which are more like cologne than parfum. These are light and airy, almost watery (but *not* aquatic!!!) solutions of violet. Not too sweet, just a bit green, a little bit powdery. Very natural and innocent without seeming childish.

These are not complex creations, just a celebration of the natural beauty of violets. The longevity of VIOLETTES DE TOULOUSE is a bit better than VIOLETTA DI PARMA, but it's still not great. But that's okay, since it gives one the license to spray and re-spray with reckless abandon!
