Oud Sinharaja vs. Amber Cologne
For a long time I have hesitated to write a comment. I have been active here for a long time and have learned to know and love many fragrances, traded, bought and hoarded. Now I occupy myself with Bortnikoff, have learned to appreciate his fragrances. High quality, natural essences composed to stories, some confusing like Triad, many profound like Oud Monarch. And Amber Cologne and Oud Sinharaja....!! Both belong together for me, are not separate fragrances telling the story of one day. Amber Cologne with a wonderful sunrise in an invigorating autumnal freshness, leading through the citric and over into the amber amber light of the approaching autumn evening. Then it ends like the day in cosy comfort. Oud Sinharaja picks up where he left off, an evening walk in the autumnal forest, reverberating in the amber-coloured cosiness of the parlour, he makes the walk flash. For me both a unit, which may feel well with me as 9ml bottles.

Safe Floral Oud...
Oud Sinharaja goes on skin slightly airy fresh, with orange bergamot eschewing is normal sharp nature, dulled by warm cardamom spice and hints of smoothe real non-fecal smelling Oud rising from the base, before transitioning to it heart. As the composition enters its early heart, the smoothe non-fecal Oud remains, now slightly sweetened by benzoin, and also joined by a jasmine and magnolia fresh floral supporting tandem. The florals are light and airy, melding seamlessly with the smoothe Oud while additionally folding traces of the well-integrated warm cardamom spice still remaining from the open into the mix. During the late dry-down the Oud and florals vacate, as the composition stays slightly sweet and even a touch powdery, with the benzoin remaining, joined by ambery, woody labdanum through the finish. Projection is average, and longevity above average at around 9 hours on skin.

Oud Sinharaja is in many ways a fine perfume. The florals and the non-fecal smelling real Oud are so well-integrated into the mix that they come off as almost an overall accord as oposed to individual notes. The composition is a touch sweet but never reaches a point throughout its development where it can be considered *too* sweet. Instead, the combined effect is a highly wearable, rather safe combination that would work for just about any occasion. The ambery labdanum driven late dry-down is rather bland and uninteresting, but never over-the-top or attention seeking. The entire thing is refined, rather subtle and pleasant smelling at all times. What the perfume is lacking to a degree, is adventure, risk and depth. Nothing concerning, but nothing really distinctive either. The bottom line is the $350 per 50ml Oud Sinharaja is a sophisticated, pleasant smelling real floral Oud concoction that neither disapoints nor particularly impresses, earning a "good" to "very good" 3 to 3.5 stars out of 5 and a mild positive recommendation to conservative perfume lovers seeking something sophisticated but safe.

Reloaded?!
After the somewhat "new" ways of the last, fourth, collection, there was a great hope among the old-established Bortnikoff fans, among whom I count myself, that Dmitry would find back a little more to his form of the first to third collection.

Of course, an artist evolves and goes through different phases in his creative development. These are reflected above all in his works. In the case of Bortnikoff in fragrances.

I was looking forward to Oud Sinharaja with the greatest hope, since oudh and floral infusions are absolutely synonymous with Dmitry DNA.

The start of the fragrance is massively reminiscent of the two Colognes (Amber & Musk). The reason for this is the well over 90% identical interplay of real-fruity citric (bergamot, grapefruit) with the hand-made signature infusion of frangipani, nutmeg and jasmine sambac.

Nice, but a little sobering.

Because that just givens / already existed.

In this case Dmitry builds the fragrance very classically and as a thoroughbred chypre. The Sri Lanka Oudh from the Amber Cologne is also used again. All in all, the fragrance appears round and plays in a league with the other premium chypre. Especially artisan.

Rarely have I had more of a feeling of being presented with a Bortnikoff "building block" scent of proven and successful chords than with this one.

For brand newcomers, certainly a paradigm shift compared to the rest of the niche. And definitely a good, even by men, wearable floral chypre scent. The oudh is mega-soft and captivates with its natural brilliance, than with purposeless Barnyard romance.

For me, in fact, the biggest disillusionment, if not disappointment from a creative point of view, from the current collection.

Again the recommendation: samples or 9ml atomizer, instead of 50ml bottle.
