Firing On All Cylinders...
*This is a review of the original vintage Bugatti release from 1992.

Bugatti (vintage) opens with a natural lemon and rosewood tandem with traces of oakmoss rising from the base. As the composition enters the early heart the lemon remains, now turning creamy and slightly sweet as a sandalwood and castoreum duo swaps places with the rosewood, with supporting carnation also joining the party. During the late dry-down the lemon and its supporting carnation vacate the composition as base notes of powdery tonka bean and vanilla join hints of leather and the remnants of the sandalwood and oakmoss. Projection is excellent, as is longevity at 12 hours on skin.

Bugatti really is quite the lemon, sandalwood and castoreum concoction at its core and the three components work in perfect harmony with one another. The animalic facets become evident rather early and are quite potent, joining the sandalwood in adding a thick creamy texture to the slightly herb-laced natural lemon. Oakmoss never takes the fore though plays a key role throughout the composition as its mossy facets show up early and then its more powdery aspects support the vanilla and tonka bean late. While it is quite in vogue to blast designer compositions associated with automotive companies, similar to the current releases from Bentley that are so highly impressive, this hidden gem from the nineties while lacking the fit and finish of the immaculate Bentley bottles is near-equally worthy scent-wise. The bottom line is the original Bugatti is a bit difficult to find on the aftermarket nowadays and may run in excess of $80 for a 100ml bottle, but this fabulous vintage release is well worth the time and monetary investment, earning an "excellent" 4 stars out of 5.
