The Power of Persuasion....

*This review is of the vintage 1981 version.

Burberrys for Men opens with fine bergamot citrus and aromatic lavender with hints of supporting mint and tarragon spice before transitioning to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart remnants of the aromatic lavender remain, now in support of an unveiled natural cedar wood note that takes the fore, with slightly sharp woody vetiver, earthy patchouli, dulled carnation and rose florals and mint-like warm marjoram spice in additional support. During the late dry-down the warm spice and aromatic woods remain, now joining moderately hard leather and slightly animalic musk from the base through the finish. Projection is slightly below average, but longevity is excellent at between 13 and 15 hours on skin.

It took me a bit of time to completely warm to Burberrys for Men. Oh, I always at least "liked" it, but something about the warm spice and aromatics just didn't quite click at first. That said, the more I wear the composition the more I find myself appreciating its seemingly endless list of ingredients that near-miraculously come together to smell quite good on the whole. The composition really isn't overly innovative, but the minty marjoram spice adds a special dimension to the aromatics in particular that set Burberrys apart from its long list of competitors. If I had one wish, it would be to have the projection enhanced a bit, but that is a small "flaw" that I find easy to overlook when taking a macro view of the perfume results. The bottom line is the discontinued $150 per 50 ml bottle on the aftermarket Burberrys for Men (1981) is not the last word of what the best of 1980's perfumery has to offer, but the "very good" to "excellent" 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5 perfume is a winner that gradually makes its case for recommending a sample or even a full bottle buy.

Not another Azzaro clone ... ?
A fougère from a time when the position of Western Male at the Top of the Heap was more or less assured (for better or for worse) and his perfume didn’t have to work too hard.
Burberrys for Men was launched in 1981, the year that Indiana Jones, the ZX81 and the first IBM Personal Computers were released, and the first Stealth Plane took to the air; so you can see, it was a year that was foundational in ways that were less significant than the emergence of a new style of Men’s Cologne...
But, coming back to our topic in hand.
Burberrys for Men is piquant, but it isn’t like today’s generation of savages where everything is stuffed with aggressive chemicals. It uses nothing more invasive than juniper, black pepper and mint.
It’s a more or less standard fougère with piquant, herbal-green, and dark woody
elements, and crucially, it also uses the key anisic note of Azzaro pour Homme (1978).
It -is- fair to criticise Burberrys as a peppery Azzaro clone, but I find it's quite well done (even if a bit of a Powerhouse).
It’s very modern for its time and it seems to be a transition away from the late seventies fougére (which was dominated by Azzaro) and towards something more penetrating.
The dark and woody-peppery style anticipates the Spiky Woods, which is still a
dominant masculine trope today.
In fact, I would argue this is one of the steps on the way to the Spiky Woods. But
unlike many of today’s masculines, Burberrys has some of the urbane chic that the fougère
always aimed for - but often failed to capture, as well as the vibrant modern feel of the Spiky Woods - but without the drawbacks.

Classic!
I recently found this vintage gem on ebay for a very good price. This version was launched in 1991 and i have only positive comments to make. First off the opening is a true Chypre. They simply don't make Chypres like this currently. How sad. Anywho aftera while the heart emerges and all those little flowery woody nuances emerge. Quite pleasant i must say and then BAM! Drop that base!! Thank God the IFRA wasn't embarrassing itself with their draconian rules and restrictions back then. Leather, a blend of Civet with Amber wrapped around glorious Oakmoss. This scent goes on for hours and hours with a gentle finish that has to be sniffed to be believed. I'm telling u this is a classic, an out and out classic. Easily in my top 10.

Fragrance was launched in 1991, not 1981 this is a common and unfortunate oversight
