Milkshake

A strawberry shake is probably a good description. The strawberry is very present right from the start. Just right for all strawberry lovers. A very creamy, beautiful, gentle fragrance that stands out somewhere. For all those who want to start with gourmand, the fragrance is a perfect introduction. It reminds me of that delicious homemade strawberry shake you used to get fresh from the ice cream parlor.

Not Quite Milk, But Still a Creamy Dream!

Tested: skin and fabric over 8 hrs.

TLDR: Smooth, simple, and well-blended Strawberry Shortcake doll scent. Extremely short life span.

- First impression after a spray on each wrist: warmth! Not in a spiced way, but in depth. The berries in the opening are darker compared to the original Her, in a way that reminds me of the YSL Mon Paris line. Like a smooth and *sweet* wine, no dry bitterness here.

After about 10 minutes (so quick…), it turns into a strawberry musk. I often hear this scent being compared to a “strawberry milk/shake”, but I don’t pick up anything lactonic or particularly milky.

Actually, I directly compared Elixir to a strawberries & cream flavoured milk, and some strawberries and cream candy. While this scent is smoother than the tangy fruitiness of candy, it’s not nearly creamy enough to be reminiscent of anything dairy-based. It’s creamy in terms of *texture*.

Instead, Elixir reminds me very much of how they used to scent Strawberry Shortcake dolls. The soft plastic, hinted with artificial strawberry that gets dense in the hair, slightly faded over time. This must be why it mixes so well into skin; the original Her, in her bright and fruity glory, sits right on top. Elixir makes herself at home.

It makes me think of an artificial, idyllic childhood. I want to wrap myself in soft blankets, watch the 80’s Care Bears Movie, and eat vanilla pudding. It’s sweet and innocent without the baby powder note often used to achieve the feeling.

As I said, this fades way too quickly. By 8 hours, Elixir is a (barely) sandalwood ghost of its former self. I’m not sure it stuck to my clothing at all tbh. Additionally, I didn’t find it to project very well, as I had to bring my wrists to my nose to smell anything almost immediately after application.

I love this flanker. It’s quietly sweet, comforting, and very nostalgic. A more demure version of the original. If only it lasted long enough to enjoy. Would be excellent to layer any strawberry or milk-focused scents with!

The beginning of my perfume story

Most perfumes smell the same to me, they all go in a similar direction - sweetish alcohol that is gone again after an hour.
That's why I've never been interested in perfumes.
Until my best friend gave me samples again.
Among them was BURBERRY - "Her Elixir".
As always, without any great expectations, I smelled the sample and immediately realized:
"This could be something with us"
For the first time in my life, I had a perfume that suited me, that I could identify with, that smelled different to me than most, that made me happy, that was sexy for me and put me in the mood. I got insane compliments.

The perfume piqued my interest, now I'm more open-minded and interested,
...maybe it's not completely hopeless after all?
Maybe I'll find something else & end up with a small signature collection of fragrances that will accompany me throughout my life?
Through Burberry - "Her Elixir" I have now landed here!

My current signature!

A sweet, girly, and bright berry scent with a warm vanilla underpinning that fades into a lovely and light amber jasmine. The juicy, sour blackberry sticks around for a long time and keeps the scent from feeling heavy or overly sweet! Definitely synthetic, but not in a bad way. I was looking for a nice, pretty every day perfume and Burberry Her Elixir was love-at-first-smell. Once it dries down and the scent starts to warm up into a sweet jasmine vanilla, I think it's absolutely perfect, and I still get wafts of it off of my clothes after one spritz and 8 hours of wear. Despite this, it doesn't radiate oppressively, so I don't feel bad wearing it in a closed space.

I find the original Burberry Her to be a little too bright and sharp for me in a way that felt like it wouldn't suit for all-around every day wear, but in contrast the Her Elixir balances out with enough of a sophisticated creamyness that I feel makes it perfectly suitable to wear to work. The bottle itself is simple in a very sophisticated and elegant way that makes it a joy to use: you can tell just from the weight of the cap that the make is of high quality. Overall, I love this perfume!

Plastic strawberry milkshake flavor

I'm starting to think my skin chemistry doesn't vibe well with the whole Burberry Her line. I had previously tried Burberry Her EdP which I had disliked because of the synthetic, almost plastic scent that emanated from my skin and this one isn't much better.

There's a tart, almost sour tinge to the strawberry and blackberries which I associated with plastic doll-like figurines that smelled of strawberries and fruits back in the day. It's synthetic, screechy and I'm just overall so turned off by it. As time goes by, the plastic accord fades a little bit and I finally gain acces to this semi-sweet strawberry milkshake people have been raving about. i'm not sure about the lactonic / creamy aspect of it since the plastic accord is still present and distracts me from the rest, but I can imagine it smells like strawberry milkshake on other peopl'e skin. Just wished it did the same on mine.

As you can see, I'm one of the minorities who dislikes this perfume, so the fault goes probably to my skin chemistry and the old memories I have of strawberry scented dolls I played with when I was young. Might be a nice feminine-leaning, gourmand perfume for most people, but to me, it's a perfume I'll be forgetting.
