A sweetie for the young
It's not easy to get hands on perfume samples that are not sold in Europe, but thanks to Parfumo.net (and Aromi), I can now test some of those.
Bigelow Barber Cologne Elixir Black is an oriental men's fragrance. It is a bit sweetish, and the general impression is that an amber note provides some black dust in it while tonka and vanilla makes it broad and a bit opulent. There is a citrusy accord that lightens the whole thing up, and also a touch of fruitiness. Somehow I get the idea of coconut and melon, but maybe my olfactory sense betrays me here. I definitely do not find any oud as listed above.
I do not like it that much. The scent is very average, nothing to write home about. In fact, it is too sweetish and too fruity. Bigelow Black is the sort of oriental gent's fragrance that you find in the chain stores all over the world. It is not at all unique.
On the other hand, the price is attractive. I saw it for less than 20 USD at Bigelowchemists, so it is a real cheapie. This was a bit of a surprise to me because while testing it, I estimated it to be about 60 USD. I think the typical customers for this should be teenage boys who cannot afford to spend a lot of money on perfume. The oriental sweetness provided by this scent makes the wearer noticeable, and I think, getting noticed is the main reason that many of the very young use perfume for.
