Clove Misery

At first I really enjoyed the Carnation/Iris duo at the start, especially when it was joined by a lipstick accord that lately I've been noticing in some perfumes and appreciating. After a while, though, like fingernails on a chalkboard, an overly spicey note of clove dominates the scent and ruins everything in this exclusive Cartier made for Neiman's. Many a fine carnation scent features red pepper. In this potentially lovely one, carnation and clove just doesn't work. Like Chanel's beautiful new Misia, the well-done florals and lipstick here captivated me at the counter. Thank goodness I bought samples home and tested them through the dry down. Now I can return my unopened FB to the store.

Dull carnation in a pretty leather case

Mathilde Laurent's creations for the luxury line entitled "Les Heures" (released in 2011) are rather well-behaved and even a bit trite for my taste.
"L'Heure Convoitée" for example, starts with a combo reminiscent of "Lipstick Rose" and "Dans tes Bras" by Malle, but quickly swings back to a hackneyed, watery lily coupled with a dominant carnation. And the carnation is there to stay. Aprrox. one hour after application, the fragrance becomes woodier, but does not impress me in the least. Should you be hankering after a more convincing carnation, try one of the old classics, e.g. the affordably priced "Billet doux" by Fragonard or Caron's "Bellodgia". If you happen to like the drydown "L'Heure Convoitée" mimicks, you'll find it in "Fleurs de Rocaille" (also by Caron).
"L'Heure Convoitée" is a simplistic fragrance, quite mono-thematic and would fit into the line of many of the well-known mainstream-companies.
But Cartier opted for the luxury-edtion, including a case made from genuine leather plus the obligatory blurp in glossy magazines. They really try very hard to sell this over-priced carnation fragrance to a certain elitiste audience... I wonder if they'll succeed. I'd never cash out 225 Euros for 75 ml of this dull carnation-scent - no matter how stylish the flacon looks in its leather case.
