Nice spicy incense with sweet touches, but familiar
Sampling Chopard Black Incense Malaki, a 2020 release, a dark, smooth, spicy mix that’s very pleasant from the start. The note breakdown makes sense—woods, vetiver, resins—with special attention to the namesake incense. With its resinous side, it’s slightly sweet, as well, though not so sweet to take away from the more spice-driven center. No particularly spicy or resinous aspect stands out apart from the general idea of incense. I can believe that it has notes of oud and/or patchouli, for example, but neither contributes significantly to the overall scent.
I liken it to Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb and Bvglari Man in Black, with Spicebomb being the slightly better of the two most of the time, with Man in Black being the better value. Black Incense Malaki is comparable enough in price to the two that I more or less regard it as equivalent in terms of value, though sometimes Man in Black is much more modestly priced on the secondary market. This seems to be Harrods exclusive, at a reasonable-enough price, of $111 for 80ml.
Certainly I’d recommend trying it if you’re interested, but there are similar fragrances out there.
