A Grapefruit Nightmare in Paradise
If you love acidic grapefruit, synthetic lotus note and vinyl chloride, this may delight your senses. However, in my case, we had a two minute relationship; we did not part as friends. Dior Addict Eau Fraiche-gets high marks for the bottle and high expectations based on its namesake "Addict" which is one of my new fragrance crushes, also the cousin Dior Addict for Life (I have a tester for) gets an honorable mention, for being well-made. However, Dior Addict Eau Fraiche- some one was "drunk-driving" the golf cart, I think. The fragrance instantly brought up suppressed memories of a week long cruise I went on to Tahiti, that should have been the once in a life time dream vacation of our lives, but ended with a countrywide airline & workers strike, being trapped eating old-rotten fruit salad, being sold 30 juicy fresh vanilla bean pods that were filled with maggots 24 hours later. The conclusion was being glared at by jaded, bitter yet exotically gorgeous muscular people with perfect skin and knee length hair and glaring ourselves at many obnoxious and angry tourists who had outstayed their welcome in paradise by refusing to learn one word of French. Any Who!
This is indeed a good sillage, sheer and truly grapefruit intense scent, but I agree with others who suggest it may lack complexity. And what is underneath is not a very pleasing realization either- like the realization that there are probably hungry children working in pearl sweatshops in Tahiti, too. Anyway, jumping off soapbox and back into Fragrance Disneyworld...
I would recommend Voluspa's Linden Blonde Tabac, Pacifica's Mango Grapefruit, Love & Toast Sugared grapefruit, Jo Malone's Grapefruit, Marc Jacobs Lola or even Lilly Pulitzer's Squeeze or any number of other fine grapefruity scents before this one. It literally made me want to go find a bottle of Calyx by Prescriptives and douse myself with it. For me, I found that the very synthetic and brash top along with a confused loud lotus-ish compost demonstrated all the class of a graceless Poptart (frozen toaster strudel). The second wave of pomegranate, sandalwood and cedar could not rescue this damsel from motion sickness. One would image that with all of the tropical fruits, this should come across as juicy, fruity and at least on the same par with "Ralph" by Ralph Lauren- (I mean, give me a break!). Sadly, I would tell anyone looking for a sheer, fresh fruity floral for balmy summer days to skip right over this and go for almost anything else on the market. Like that Tahitian trip, I came home feeling deflated, nauseated and just wanting to forget it ever happened.
Addendum: I just received a travel circular in the mail, literally 2 days after writing the review above from the very company we took this awful trip with 3 years ago and I couldn't stop laughing at the serendipity of it all. When I read the first sentence which asks "What do you remember most about your last adventure on the m/s Paul Gauguin? Boundless French Polynesian hospitality...elegant ambiance...the lavish comforts and amenities of your oceanview stateroom...the sumptuous shores and welcoming island spirit of the South seas?" Hahaha! I guess I should just cc: them my review!
