Close ... but no cigar :)
When I first tried CdG Series 2 Red: Rose at the very beginning of my Rose fascination (some time ago now) I thought it was rather good. I tested the remainder of my sample today and am not so convinced anymore.
The problem is, since then I've tried a large number of Rose frags and discovered all sorts ... spicy, gourmand, oud laden and others very similar in makeup to this one. Some sites list the inclusion of pink pepper here, which as a note in general I have come to dislike ... not necessarily because I don't like the way it smells, but for the simple reason that it seems to be a note-du-jour, 'peppering' (if you'll pardon the pun) countless releases by houses as revered as Chanel to others which are not.
Firstly, I find that there are too much in the way of berries here, which one would think would render Series 2 Rose in a more 'jam-like' gourmand way, but does not. The Rose is unfortunately rather pale and wispy, as if one were staring at a watercolor of the flowers, with a single rose in a vase trying to get it's perfume to you from the next room. This Rose is quite demure and very discrete.
Had this fragrance been a lot stronger I would've had a bottle of it ages ago, but the sillage is very average and the longevity poor ... on my skin at least.
This one is for folk who like roses, but at a distance. A good scent for office situations and also for the guys fond of Rose, but not necessarily of the kind that like to smell like the rose gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show ... like me :).
It's not a disagreeable fragrance, but not one that I would tear a muscle trying to find. Funny how perceptions change, no?
