Neukölln 13: Would you prefer traditional or more classic?
D.R. Harris is a London drugstore, which has existed since 1790 and is purveyor to the court of the Queen of England and the Princes of Wales. This is also how the bottles and labels look like. And so it is, for better or worse, also with the assortment policy. Currently, the category "Colognes and toilet waters" contains a manageable and conservative twelve products, plus six shaving lotions.
In terms of fragrances, there is a choice of such revolutionary-looking directions as "Windsor", "Mayfair" and "Albany", and, for the very brave, "Freshening", "Classic" and "Traditional". This one, "Traditional", will be offered for 40 pounds per 100 ml bottle (probably from January 1st, 2021 again ounces...), but not to Germany, because "sorry, this product is not available in your country".
This circumstance does not cause me any depression, because I do not find this cologne to be outstanding.
Contrary to the heavily orange-laden contents (which is why, according to the company's website, it is a "warm fragrance, well suited to the transitional seasons"), I find the opening to be decidedly farinistic, in other words strongly reminiscent of 4711. I perceive an independence here at best in the sense of a moderate nobility (made-to-measure, not made-to-measure), which I would have attributed to a densely woven lavender accord, if the note was not completely missing in the official list of ingredients. Speaking of my presumed phantom perceptions: a slight spiciness, perhaps with a serious peppery note in suit grey, is what I mean to interpret
After perhaps ten to fifteen minutes, the fragrance presents itself to me in a more compact form and with a certain bold, two-dimensional sharpness. Spee's wife, known for her laconic scent classifications, likes to be called "Toilet Freshness", although she probably didn't want to refer to toilet water. Even after two to three hours, Traditional, another difference to Cologne's reference cologne, is still clearly perceptible (even if only up close), and in fact, it is now more beautiful again, namely as a well-done orange-sweet-lemon dessert.
All in all, a fragrance that reinforces my prejudice that Colognes thrive better on the continent, from Spain to Turkey and from Sicily to Berlin, than on the rainy island.
And this applies to both the classic and the traditional ones.
