Neukölln 19: Plain Vanilla
Plain vanilla means "plain vanilla" and is the simplest and cheapest ice cream variety in American commerce (probably not only there). That's why the term is also used for all plain, simple (but by no means bad!) basic versions of whatever, even things that have nothing to do with vanilla or with ice cream: In the financial market, plain vanilla swaps are the basic version of interest rate derivative transactions (swaps) that are still built just simply enough to be explained to a non-banker in less than 15 minutes. Plain vanilla swaps are thus perhaps the only swaps that are not under general suspicion of being dubious anyway. Ok, the financial acrobats among our readers will disagree, of course.

So it should be clear that the headline does not mean that this cologne smells like vanilla. Although.... if you talk yourself into it long enough.... Vanilla sugar anyway...., no, shooed away the thought!

Limon Cicegi (lemon blossom) by Duru is one of those classic cheap Turkish supermarket colonyas that can be used for all sorts of things, disinfecting, as an aftsershave, for a quick freshness kick spray from the 100 ml bottle, for washing your face from the 5 litre canister, you can probably shower with it too. And it's the one that's the most just straightforward of all the ones I've tested so far. It doesn't stand out in any way unpleasantly in any direction. Plain vanilla just.

In terms of type, Limon Cicegi is not a Farina cologne (no 4711 accord, so all-clear for the omaphobics), but an exemplary light cologne: white/light yellow and clearly lemony in orientation (though there may well be some bergamot or orange lateral). The citrus scent is silvery-pearly, it avoids sour and sharp extremes, and is instead quite pleasantly powdered-sugar sweet-tinged (but without tipping into the candied). At the same time, this cologne is extremely clean and gives off nice barbershop associations of neck shaving and talcum powder.

The performance is modest, of course, but the longevity is not ridiculous. For an hour or two, the silvery, citrusy hint definitely lingers on the skin. At the end there is something that I find not unpleasant, but somehow a little droll and no longer as clearly lemony as the beginning. Maybe a not-so-perfect musky fluffiness-woody notes melange. But that does not weigh heavily and does not detract from the round overall impression.

According to my research, including on the manufacturer's website, there seems to be no difference between the fragrance labeled Limon (lemon - as seen here in the Parfumo picture) and the one labeled Limon Cicegi (lemon flower, it says on my bottle). It's probably the same scent. This Duru should be (at least in Berlin, I don't know how it looks in Istanbul) the top seller of its genre, and not without reason. I'm curious about the Mandarin scent of the same house, though it's far less widespread
