A floral chypre when all is said and done.
A typically smart and category-merging fragrance from Lauder.

Gorgeous start with a bright citrus tone that transitions comfortably to the strong green spirit connecting the top to the heartnotes (galbanum, juniper, clary sage.) It’s a beautiful synergy, and wonderfully constructed to allow you to continue to make out the individual notes. I’m a huge fan of clary sage oil and I just found myself giggling at how clear its voice was in this fragrance.

By the heart of Lauder for Men, the florals rise fully to the surface. Maybe jasmine, and a sharp carnation, but muget. Muguet! Who thought of putting that odd combination of delicacy and potency that the muget conveys in the middle of this potent chypre née fougère? Brilliant move! The heavy, almost waxy floral quality that muguet imparts is the ideal piece to transform the heart slowly to a woody/tobacco base.

People call this a brute, a Masculine Power Frag, a knuckle-dragger? Wow, I know my gender sensors might be calibrated differently than most, but I find Lauder a wonderfully assured, long-lasting fragrance that is ultimately a floral chypre that could easily be worn within current American gender norms by both men and women.

Lauder for Men reminds me that while Estée Lauder is principally known for its feminine fragrances, to my mind, their best fragrances are the Lauder/Aramis masculines.

Powerhouse Heaven...
*This is a review of vintage Lauder for Men

Lauder for Men (vintage) opens with a standout top note of gin-like juniper berries that are the first to arrive in full force in an all-out nasal assault before they quickly disappear. The juniper berries quickly transition to the heart notes including lavender-like clary sage, joined by a prominent carnation with a sanitized jasmine-like lily-of-the-valley undertone and hints of slightly orange-like coriander spice. All of the heart notes take a back seat to a tremendously strong oakmoss note that rises all the way from the base as it dominates the scent's development from near top to bottom without obscuring the other components too much. Supporting the dominant oakmoss in the base through the dry-down as the heart notes slowly recede is a slightly sweet sandalwood that balances the composition to a degree. Projection and longevity are both excellent to exceptional.

Lauder for Men (vintage) is a brilliant powerhouse of a scent that is the 80s to the extreme. It is quite potent and can easily be over-applied to levels that will clear rooms in record time, but when used in smaller doses it exudes strength and power from its wearer. This is one of those kinds of scents I can see a boardroom exec wearing if they want to show "the others" who is the boss. The oakmoss used to pair with the carnation heart is amazing, and I doubt you can find scents nowadays that can replicate it as the regulations are too strict on the levels that can be used. As such, Lauder for Men (vintage) is one of those rare powerhouse aromatic fougere finds from the past that folks should snatch up while you still can, earning an "excellent" 4 stars out of 5.

Solid formality
Lauder for Men is a quite “institutional” masculine fougère comprising herbal notes, dark woods, a heavy dose of oak moss, something camphoraceous (benzoin, I guess), a clean floral breeze of the usual “masculine” flowers (lavender, carnation) providing a pleasant barbershop feel. All over this blend, a pleasant and vibrant balsamic feel, really crisp and natural. This fragrance smells particularly well crafted and composed to me, a bit more than the “average” of this genre, mostly because it brilliantly comprises several nuances and shades, from floral notes to the dark woody-mossy base notes, passing through a sort of chypre structure evocating animalic nuances. It’s consistent and solid, yet more complex and vast than others. Extremely masculine (in a refined meaning, not a “macho” scent) and quite formal. Not the most distinctive scent of its era, as it reminds me of several other “virile” colognes (Aramis for instance, by the same brand) but a solid, compelling masculine classic for sure.

For men? No! For real men!
review on FIRST FORMULA:

It's finally here...Oh my, it's been like ages untill it arrived! Got the very first formula of this perfume and I have to say with all my heart and soul it's how a REAL man should SMELL like! But I have to say from beginning it's like the son of original Aramis and with mother Knowing and some hints from Hugo Boss NO.1 .
Ladies and gentlemen let me present you Lauder for Men, pardon, real men!

From the beginning, one spray or two max. and you release the KRAKEN! In the first 1h max or 2 it's pretty much a BOMB made of fresh oakmoss, patchouli, juniper berries that are VERY potent and I mean it! So, if you can't resist...go wash it, kid! But, if you didn't know this fades pretty quick (~30 min) on my skin and the gentle part comes.
Gentle part? Mhhm, heard that right! Lily of the valley with some citruses (lemon and some orage too!) and some dark deep rose are there to make your breath easier...but in same time feel more free. But this on my skin lasts like 5h with decent projection. (~15-30cm) so you can still be noticed!
In the end, for me it gets a skin scent for like 2-3h ~ max and it has something charm and you can only smell or the lady who wants to kiss you. But what will she smell? Amber, musk, some vanilla and a hint of sandalwood. Lovely. Keep it mind, EVERYTHING smells so fresh...so crisp and of course natural like your attitude and smile when you wear this!

Overall, you don't need nore than 2 sprays...starts blasting off in a good subtle and patient way but settles down calm and gentle.

Wear it on autumn, when you are having a special night-out date with someone more than special!

P.S : I'm 18 and I love this...but I have a very obvious honest advice for that young men that the club is the new house and wearing tons of Le Male, 1 Million and stuff like that, don't ever try this gem! Please, keep your nose safe.

Exquisite Cologne
I cannot tell you how great this perfume is. I returned to use this pearl of the 80's and, in fact, the quality of the same is indescribable, whether or not reformulations have existed.
A unique perfume, not to be confused with any other. Some say it has some similarities with Boucheroun Pour Homme, however, it is different, and it evolves differently, in a typical concept of the Estee Lauder house. As someone already said, this perfume could be called the "son" of Aramis and Knowing.
It is not marketed in many countries, but I recommend its acquisition. It is mandatory in the collection of a true aficionado.

A 1980s type of scent analogous to others of the time (Le 3me Homme) with prominent patch plus herbal and citric notes.
