Maybe Not Quite Up To "Big Screen" Status...
Hollywood for Men opens its curtains with a fresh, vague slightly synthetic light fruit accord. As the composition moves to its early heart the vague synthetic fruit joins a buttered popcorn accord that emerges as co-star, with moderately aromatic lavender and synthetic greens as support. During the late dry-down the composition turns to slightly sweet, powdery amber as star with rough leather joining the remnants of the buttered popcorn hanging around through the finish as support. Projection is average to above average and longevity spot-on average at about 8 hours on skin.
Whether one likes Hollywood for Men or not, it is hard to argue that the composition isn't unique. I can't think of a perfume that features synthetic buttered popcorn mixed with fruit in such a prominent fashion. The name "Hollywood" does seem apropos, as when wearing the composition one does kind of think of some of the fragrances experienced sitting down at your local cinema watching the silver screen. I must say on first glance the combination of vague fruit, lavender and buttered popcorn (synthetic, just like the fake butter topping used at the movies) doesn't inspire confidence in one enjoying the composition, but in an odd way it actually works to a degree. The only real disappointment is the late dry-down, which chooses the all too common generic amber focus. All-in-all, I wouldn't say I am a huge fan of the overall composition profile of Hollywood for Men, but there is something about it that keeps it in my collection. Maybe it is my pleasant Fred Hayman memories (as the Haymans brought us Giorgio for Men)? Maybe it is the odd buttered popcorn? All I know is that Hollywood for Men was an extremely inexpensive blind buy that has proven hard to get rid of and I *do* like the stuff despite its flaws and hideous cheap bottle. The bottom line is the $13.50 per 100ml bottle Hollywood for Men is not going to fool anyone that it smells expensive with its cheap looking bottle and highly synthetic nature, but it easily distinguishes itself from the pack with its innovative mixture of gourmand and non-gourmand elements, earning it a "good" 3 star out of 5 rating and a modest recommendation. At its relatively low cost per bottle, as a value play Hollywood for Men is hard to beat.
