Fresh, green, woody, and a bit to the aquatic side. Nice overall.
This is my first proper sampling of Blue Cypress, one of the original releases in 2016 from Goldfield & Banks, named after a species found in Northern Territory, Australia. It’s difficult for me not to take its name to heart, as, even though I get a fresh green woody note, I do envision a blue aquatic side to it, as well, a sort of cross between the two concepts very brightly juxtaposed. It does remind me vaguely of some freshie men’s fragrances of the 90s and 2000s, but certainly it’s an improvement in terms of sophistication and better-quality ingredients, despite the overall aroma being a bit familiar. This is, simply put, an easy unisex modern freshie winner, apt for anyone anytime, and I imagine the only turnoffs will be due to some of the scent memories I’m experiencing, which for me are perfectly pleasant but for others might not be so great.

Blue Cypress is priced like most of the main collection, at $190 for 100ml, sold via great boutiques in the US like Perfumology, and performs quite well as a freshie. Being under the $2 / ml still is a good sign, pricing-wise.

Big Big Red with menthol
At the very beginning, within 30 seconds, the fragrance reminds me of the taste of Big Red chewing gum. However, this cinnamon note quickly fades and the balsamic ingredients quickly emerge. Lavender, patchouli and star anise form a really great harmony that also takes on a medicinal character for me in some moments. Sometimes the composition drifts into a kind of cold-bath situation for me, but in a positive way. Maybe the decorative cypress that I can't clearly distinguish from the other notes comes out and pushes the whole thing in a medicinal direction? But even if that sounds strange, it still smelled very good to me, especially balsamic. Unfortunately, I didn't find the longevity so convincing.

A decidedly bitter note
I showed this one to three different family members and we've all agreed that it's just terrible. The initial spray is pleasant enough. Fresh and somewhat generic. But then... oof! That drydown. There is something so bitter about it. My mom actually described it as a "vomit" undertone. I am not as dramatic as her, but I will say the combination of herbs is just too bitter to be appealing for me at all. Not sure what else to say.

Opening was fresh, clean, citrusy. On paper, the dry-down was very feint and somewhat bitter.

Clean, fresh and dry. Nothing spectacular. Green and salty. Its ok but at this price point you would expect something more special.

Fairly generic but a pleasant aquatic, fresh and clean scent. Feels unisex to me and dries down to a lemon body wash scent

A rainy forest, fresh aromatic woody scent. Punchy cypress and lavender with a prominent "cool blue" showel gel accord running through it.
