Winter has surrendered to spring in love..
What is behind the sonorous perfume name 'Chamade'? I'd like to go back a little before I dedicate myself to this delicious fragrance, which I got to know through our treasure hunter (Thank you, dear Sven!).

The Napoleonic armies announced this with a very special drum roll, the so-called 'Chamade', by voluntarily surrendering themselves longing for peace, laying down their weapons before their opponents and surrendering. And if the enemy was still very far away, he could hear the rhythmically concise drum beats in the distance and knew how to interpret them. It was immediately clear how it was on the other side. Chamade' - this onomatopoeic word speaks of taking oneself back in conflict out of love and giving oneself to the other out of affection without reserve.

So this onomatopoeic perfume name, which I always say to myself with great pleasure, is a symbol for love, an old or a new love or for a new stage in love. I spontaneously think of the simple and at the same time profound statement of the German poet Hans-Christian Neuert: "I surrender to love because love has surrendered to you"

In 1969, Jean-Paul Guerlain was inspired by his fiancée's warm surrender to the fragrance 'Chamade'. And he must have put a lot of heart and soul into this fragrance...

...I spray it up and feel instantly transferred to a cool forest clearing at dawn. White veils of mist silently make room for me as I set out to leave the forest. I see the clearing in front of me, let myself be tickled by the first rays of winter sun, which break through the dark branches and flash more and more frequently in front of me. From time to time I still feel the cool morning breeze cutting through my face, this tremendously refreshing moisture that has clung to the trees and will remain there for a long time to come.

The air is pure and completely unspent, and following an ancient ritual, the birds, one by one, begin their melodious singing. The scents of 'Chamade', however, do not do it like birds, they all perform at the same time, singing their polyphonic praises of nature as a choir. Right at the beginning, the fragrance chords of rose, hyacinth and lily of the valley sound in unison; they have the cantus firmus, i.e. the main melody; accompanied by jasmine and soft lilac blossoms. Their tone sequences sound in wide arcs and fortunately the composer has always intended a fermata for them. So you may linger longer...heavenly this violet lilac in pastel shades and the dominant shining jasmine. Also deaf-wetted grasses, beguiling spices and smoky-balsamic woods contribute, have their ancestral place in the score.

And as is usual with a work with a large cast, there are also accompanying figures, instruments that remain quiet and in the background and thus contribute significantly to the atmosphere of the piece. Just like a harp that is plucked with great zeal during the tutti passages and yet can only be heard by the very attentive connoisseur, here and there clouds of frankincense and the sweet smell of vanilla float with it and give the whole a unique flair

Between the seasons there are rough transitions and in between there are quite isolated days, sometimes only one, on which one feels: Today the winter is over and today the first spring day is there. You all know that...you go out the door and clearly feel the spring awakening, even if cooler days follow. One knows about this point in the calendar of the yearly cycle. And that's how 'Chamade' is.

It is this single, first day that announces spring...still having winter on its back, it frees itself, goes forward and makes its way. Sparkling pearls of hoarfrost still lie on branches and twigs in the morning and the fallen leaves still break here and there under my feet. But winter has already surrendered to spring. The air is full of music and everything smells intense.

Chamade 1999 EDT version reviewed.

Chamade reminds me of the Kim Novak blondes.
Put together, a bit formal but oozing in warmth and quiet sensuality. Chamade belongs alongside First By VCA, another warm floral, Vivre by Molyneux (worn by royalty) and YSL Y (worn by Julie Andrews..more royalty you could say) .

Hyacinth was known as a luxurious flower to be put into fragrances back in the 60s-70s. The balsams, woods keep a powdery warmth and inviting comfort and sensuality to Chamade, and also is brilliant in the way it never veers to sharp like the others mentioned in its similar cohorts, yet accomplishes to feel fresh, luminescent and green in its starting phases, then taken over by a velvet rose and a hint of jasmine. Its just ...exquisite.
