I do not like all scents that come from Guerlain. That chocolate-cocoa type of fragrance is not my cup of tea at all. I will never make friends with the original L'Instant pour Homme as well as with the Eau Extrême. On the other hand, there are no unpleasant notes – it all depends on what the perfumer has made of them. Some notes that I find particularly problematic sometimes discreetly appear in great perfumes. Often, they are the icing on the cake!
Such a dot on the I are the chocolate notes in both of the lighter variations: L'Instant d' Un Été pour Homme and L'Instant pour Homme Christaux d'Agrumes. In both cases the dark chocolate comes in casually, so transparent and light that you may not even use the word “gourmand” for these fragrances. Very good, so finally, I find my way to get near to L'Instant pour Homme.
Both variants are outstanding summer fragrances. Whereas in Christaux d'Agrumes a really beautiful citrus note leads over to a slightly salty, aquatic tendency, the pale blue L'Instant d'Été pour Homme is characterized by a wonderful discreet and transparent Eau de Cologne accord in the head notes. Eau de Cologne notes with their slight neroli appeal belong to the tradition of Guerlain - just remember the many Eaux they have.
Both perfumes are different by only slight nuances in their head, but in the Guerlain universe, they are light years apart. Whereas the Christaux d'Agrumes with its citric-aquatic tendency is almost avant garde for a Guerlain perfume, L'Instant d'Un Été establishes a relation to the great Eau de Cologne tradition of this house. These traditional Eaux do not stand in the spotlight so that one can discover a lot. While Eau de Cologne Imperiale, conformable to the doctrine, consists only of top notes, others do have heart and even base notes (Cologne du 69, Eau de Guerlain), however sometimes discreet (Cologne du Parfumeur). L'Instant d'un Été perfectly fits into the row of those “little” Guerlains.
In opposite to the Christaux d'Agrumes variation I find L'Instant d'un Été more wearable and less strenuous. The aquatic undertones of Christaux d'Agrumes, together with the strange chocolate-cocoa note are a bit challenging. This fragrance should be used with consideration, maybe also limited to a few hours. L'Instant d'un Eté pour Homme, on the other side, is common ground – I like this fragrance around me all day long. (You will have to re-apply for that.) Both are beautiful in their own way.
Both perfumes were released as limited editions and hardly available by now. I was lucky to find them at Parfümerie Kobberger, a perfume shop in Frankfurt/Germany in spring 2011. With only 49 € per 125 ml L'Instant d'un Eté pour Homme was sold at an extremely fair price.
