From the cradle to eternal silence
It is no wonder that we, who as infants were conditioned to vanilla (-flavor) in the infant milk from the factory, have built up a great affinity for vanilla-containing products.
There may also be the stark opposite; people who deeply dislike anything with vanilla for this reason. I love vanilla.
I love vanilla when it's not sticky, molasses-like on me.
Here I got some samples, which were allowed to move on immediately for the above reasons.
Thought that was it with the extract of parts of the orchid-like plant in fragrances.

Shalimar was always a fear opponent in my eyes.
In particular, with the spice-heavy base essence described as Guerlinade, I was always afraid. I myself could never wear them, but smelled them very much on ladies.
Amazing that there are wearers / on which this fragrance can be elegant and strong, while on others it seems completely out of place and stubborn.
When Planefolia was announced here on this page, I was already triggered, something let expect great.
At that time I was on several short trips through Europe's southern climes and came on the way back also through Belgium. So two bottles taken with me.
In the back room of the perfume salon and in my cerebrum again and again the word "limited". Pulls with me. Almost always.
What I feel when wearing, I can not and will not even dress in words, it touches me deeply.
This dark, almost black, slightly coked vanilla immediately affects my synapses.
The light smoke is joined by the spice of guerlinade, unmistakable and very well woven into this fragrance creation.
It is a real delight to smell the sprayer, sensational, on the other hand, to smell so of warm skin.
So there it was: the olfactory enrichment called Guerlain DNA.
The scent veil rising from the wrist or the neck seizes not only me, but also all the people around me. Some also perceive a dark, full-bodied aroma of a long conched chocolate melting in the mouth.
Without exception, all people confronted with the fragrance are enthusiastic about this fragrance and no one assigns this fragrance the clear classification female.
Not that I care.
This Glücklichmacherwässerchen will probably only really come into its own at temperatures around freezing point. Me already creep loss fears and I will probably have to create a stock. I wrote yes already: limited.

From the cradle to eternal silence: vanilla.
So I want to smell, when my family, friends and all who were important to me, in the hopefully still distant future of me take leave.
Always the comforting scent of this wonderful Planefoliavanille in the memory.
That would be great!

No ode
I promised to compare the previous Ode variants with the new fragrance. The first Ode ( Shalimar Ode à la Vanille ) I missed, the second and third I have.

The competition is not entirely fair, after all, the new fragrance is not an "ode". It was wise of Guerlain to call the new fragrance no longer "Ode à la Vanille": so you go out of the way of the comparison.

The jury is also biased: a Shalimar wearer who particularly appreciates the top note in "Shalimar" - the top note that puts off so many.

For comparison compete:
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar
Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia
Bourbon vanilla bean.

START.
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique starts with lots of bergamot and distinct animalic hints - and stays that way for a while.

Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar quickly loses the bergamot and is bright, radiant and spicy from the start.

Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia seems lame and bland next to it, the bergamot is completely missing, the civet only hints.

The vanilla bean smells dark, woody, oily, absolutely unsweet - and actually not vanillig.
No, Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia does not smell like a vanilla bean: the dark, woody-oily is not present, the scent is equally warm and soft.

AFTER 10 MIN. the civet in Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia is pronounced enough to stand up to other scents. I like the fragrance at this stage - but its competitors even more.

AFTER ONE HOUR, Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique becomes less animalic, vanilla emerges - and remains. After two hours, you notice it clearly.

Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar is still radiant-spicy, vanilla is also perceptible here. Since I know that the fragrance will remain so luminous and not too sweet until the end, I take it out of the comparison now. This was and is my favorite variant.

The civet of the Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia is still there.

3. HOUR.
Mexique becomes sweeter. The citrus is still there, but is almost covered by vanilla. Chocolate I have never smelled in the fragrance, but incense is discreetly perceptible.

Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia loses civet and becomes more flat.

Vanilla bean has a fragrance development! You can guess vanilla as you know it. Still wholly unsweet. We now also leave out the pod, it would unfold its vanilla soul only "diluted" in the dough.

BASIS.
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar is vanillig, rather spicy than resinous.

Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique is sweeter, but also more resinous. Almost too sweet for me, since I like it resinous, I still like the scent.

Vanilla bean remains vanilla bean.

Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia unfortunately weakens. The fragrance has become a pure vanilla scent, soft, round, not particularly sweet - but only vanilla. A very nice vanilla, with a bit of wool in it - but so can the others. If I want vanilla, I can reach for "Collection Extraordinaire - Orchidée Vanille | Van Cleef & Arpels", which "Vanille Planifolia" reminds me of towards the base.

CONCLUSION: Guerlain has done everything right. A small beast in the top note to make the Shalimar lovers mild. Small enough not to ver-stimmen the non-lovers. A round, pleasant vanilla fragrance, cozy and easy to wear.

The phrase "Finally a Shalimar for me!" you will hear more often, which is perfectly fine, you just have to be aware that here "Shalimar" is only in the name. We know that by now, many Shalimar flankers have little in common with the original - and "Black Opium" is not "Opium" at all.

I will use up my bottling, this is a nice fragrance. Would I buy a bottle? At the current price certainly not. Since Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique has become much cheaper after a while, I would wait and see.

And the winner of the contest? Lyra Eau de Toilette . Finest Guerlain vanilla, this time in the fragrance, not in the name.

Insight of the day - I need a self-help group
Is this vanilla stuff rightly the reigning number 1 of the Da-Dü list?.... possibly the holy grail for vanillos...?
Me, 45 and a self-confessed vanilla addict.... (spontaneous salivation).... say... (involuntary facial twitch).... YAAAAAA!!! (hysterical laughter) ....
This swag is really just wuuuundervolll.... (transfigured eyes)

The scent : for me the perfectly balanced vanilla, not too sweet, slightly smoky touch.... noble, elegant and to melt away fine.... 10 points
The sillage: is not the strongest.... no it's not .... it's perfect! ... it is always present in the most pleasant way without ever narcotizing itself or others.... 10 points
The durability: is just long enough that the fabric never doesn't start to annoy me.... nice things also have to go sometime so you can look forward to them again.... 10 points
The flacon : as noble as the content.... 10 points

Oh great, now I've got myself so hooked again that I need to organise a backup somewhere....where else is this going to go....
Realization of the day: I am a Vanillo...and need ne self-help group

Too bad- no unshalimar Shalimar
Years ago, I first encountered Shalimar in a department store. I had heard a lot about him. A classic, a legend, which already carried our grandmothers and great-grandmothers...
In the specific case, I was spiked by an autobiographical interview of the actor Winfried Glatzeder, so the "The Legend of Paul and Paula"-Glatzeder "whose grandmother at the time also already wore Shalimar".

So I was interested and open-minded, but unfortunately the scent horrified me when I sprayed it on, tempting me to snub my head and quickly evaporate.
Thus, Shalimar remained ticked off for me for a long time.

Years later, I actually let myself be persuaded by a Douglas saleswoman to Shalimar perfume initial test and was after a thoughtful night enthusiastic and willing consumer.
So there was still hope for the Shalimare and me!

So now I was at parfumo and let myself be carried away by the current enthusiasm and almost mass hysteria of the last few weeks for the new Shalimaren.
It was said: Shalimar-untypical, unshalimar, "best Shalimar ever", one superlative chased the next. And then still the principle of scarcity- whereby the brain usually has no other chance of reaction and morst "buy buy buy!!", - one does not want to fall prey to the panic of irretrievable loss.

I really wanted to give him a chance, it could go well. Besides, the bottle is SO so beautiful and museum and deco.

So I shredded the package so after 3 weeks of waiting (and beautiful anticipation) on, applied full of excitement the new addition and thought
"Crap!"

No Simsalabim revelation miracle happened, I smelled tart smoke resin, which is just not my cup of tea. It reminded me of resinous Greek wines, retsina. And that's bitter. Then there's this damp leather note that becomes sticking plaster, "Leukoplast". Damn! (Some described this here in advance probably as plastic-like?)

Even if the good then develops after an hour more pleasant and somewhat warmer-smoky vanilla, -this could then be a comparison with Cuir Beluga-, nevertheless, one / woman must first get over these "older notes" of the beginning.

Also, similarities to Aura sublime were mentioned here, which also made me optimistic at first. I must say, however, that Aura sublime is lovely-vanilla as well as lemony- and not so initially-herb-harzig-ledrig as this Shalimar-LE.

I do not know yet what I do with him after the initial disappointment...
I "practice" now the 3rd day, as you have to listen to a bulky music record first pure.

Well, it was a (blind) attempt, gern hätt I shared the enthusiasm. But he will certainly continue to have his following, because fortunately tastes and receptors are different.

Shalimar - An ode to modernity
On Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia I was really extremely excited.
The original Shalimar, in my case the vintage extract, I got to know and love by a happy coincidence some time ago.
By my preference for vanilla fragrances and by the fact that Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route du Mexique and Shalimar Ode à la Vanille - Sur la route de Madagascar are no longer available for some time or only at absolutely indisputable prices, I was now on the lookout and ordered practically the minute the fragrance was available here in Germany. And how clever that was, lol, because at the moment he is probably (temporarily?) Sold out.

The fragrance ... freshly sprayed on for about ten minutes I recognize quite clearly the Shalimar DNA, complete with flowers and bergamot, only much less offensively, and not in such an overwhelming rush as with the Eau de Parfum.
Then, however, until the fade, the vanilla takes the reins. A so fine vanilla that I become quite reverent.
Elegant, radiant, velvety, golden, spicy and a hint smoky. A fragrance like a noble cashmere scarf.

The grande dame is still a diva. Is self-confident and sovereign as ever. But she has put on a modern, young, exciting new garb. Graceful and beguiling and very unique.

The vanilla so, as only Guerlain can do it. Certainly not tame or undemanding pleasing. And certainly not generic in the sense of interchangeable.
Who wears Shalimar, makes a statement. And Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia is definitely a statement fragrance, too. Self-confident, peppy, fearless, ravishing.
Just like its wearer.

This is how life inside vanilla pod must smell like. Only reminiscent of the classic with vanilla being dominant note in top, mid and base

Late drydown of Shalimar, with very emphasized vanilla notes, followed by faint floral nuances. Cosy, but pretty boring, somehow.

The most vanilla of all Shalimar editions, Guerlain vanilla is boosted to the maximum. Resinous, powdery, vanilla coziness
