About a golden amber scent, glamorous artwork and Studio 54
Roy Halston Frowick, or just Halston as he liked to be called, was one of the most influential names in American fashion of the 1970s. He dressed stars like Lauren Hutton, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Bianca Jagger and Liza Minelli. However, he had a tragic end: he lost the right to trade using his own name, died young (of AIDS in 1990) and, until recently, only survived faint notoriety through his Revlon distributed perfume brand. Halston's fame took a new breath when the biographical series of the same name aired on Netflix.
Italian model Elsa Peretti, who came to New York in 1968, portraying a black eye from a former lover, soon became part of the New York fashion wave. She made the tabloids for coca-powered scenes in Studio 54 as well as for her revolutionary designs. She became the figurehead of the Studio 54 decadence ambience. Unlike her best friend Roy Halston, she made it out alive. She launched a hugely successful line of jewellery that is currently celebrating a 40-year partnership with Tiffany. And yes, she designed the wonderful bottles used by some Halston perfumes like Halston Man Eau de Toilette and Halston Woman series.

Halston Man Amber is a great oriental woody fragrance. I find it very masculine, with excellent quality and an almost perfect mix.
This perfume is one of the few amber perfumes that can be easily used in warm weather. Resins and woody notes are key, but a very subtle oud note makes all the difference. It's a very wearable fragrance, but also really unique. Its balsamic, warm and slightly sweet chords stand out. It literally grabs the attention of the people around us in the air, wondering where such a remarkable scent comes from.
I bought it blind after I was really impressed with #Halston. Since the brand is not sold in my country, I bought it blindly (from a US online store). It's my best blind buy ever.
It opens very shyly, with the top citrus and thyme notes struggling to dominate the evaporating alcohol. In my humble opinion, that initial burst is the perfume's only flaw. I'm glad it lasts less than half a minute.
A few moments later you will notice the growing scent of sweet myrrh and amber, but never too sweet. You actually feel like this chord lingers in the air around you. It stays sharp in a good way and is maintained by the appearance of the oud and sandalwood bottom notes. Then control is quietly passed to the long and convincing resinous and woody drydown.
If you forget about the not-so-controlled opening, this fragrance is an example of a near-perfect blend. The lifespan is above average. I also rate the sillage and projection as average to above average.
The fragrance reveals class and sophistication in all phases. The highest quality and a general "expensive" feeling are evident.

How do I rate this Studio 54 related perfume?
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
- Fragrance opening: 9.0 (my assessment; I took 1 point because of the initial alcohol breakout)
- Scent Dry Down: 10.0 (my judgment, noble and hard to beat as oriental / woody)
- Longevity: 8.0 (> 8 hours, 3 sprays)
- Sillage: 7.0 (sillage peaks at 5 ~ 6 feet, projection for 2+ hours)
- Versatility: 9.0 (just avoid very hot days)
- Ease of use: 9.0 (very good for almost any situation; great for fancy events and intimacy; do not use it in places where you could sweat, like the gym or the seaside)
- Compliments: 9.0 (very serious compliment grabber)
- Uniqueness: 9.0 (some minor similarities to other upscale newer fragrances such as Royal Amber)
- Quality: 9.0 (it smells expensive and classy. It competes with fragrances I have that cost a lot more than Halston's Man Amber; very good overall quality)
- Presentation: 9.0 (very nice bottle; it really stands out in my drawer; not many people know this fragrance and everyone who looks at my collection asks about this bottle and the golden Oud flask by John Varvatos)
- Price: 10.0 (17.50 € for 125 ml, including VAT and shipping; it is not a tester.)
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
Overall grade: 8.91 / 10.00
- between 7 and 8 = above average;
- between 8 and 9 = recommended;
- greater than 9 = don't miss it;
My opinion: Halston Man Amber has been my signature fragrance for more than a year. I still feel it to be very comfortable, classy and manly. I strongly recommend it. DON'T MISS IT!

Wonderful
Excellent. VERY similar to 24 Gold by Scent story, except this one has a bit more of a masculine edge to it. Well worth buying.

Halston Goes Oud
Modern, woody and most assuredly... balmy. First impression is that of Armani Prive Ambre Soie, but far from linear. Halston Amber is not loud, but it is far from quiet. Throughout its transitions, each layer of notes are given abundant time to be vibrant. As we soar deeper into the dry-down the oud begins to cape the fragrance, but domesticated by bergamot and Virginia cedar. Myrhh is raw, but is a team player here. The more the middle and base settles, the more of a Middle Eastern vibe I get... and more is better. Even the bottle looks the part. I'm not a Halston fan, but I'm proud to have this among my collection.

Till 3 years ago, Halston Amber was my signature fragrance. I still consider it a reference for comfort, seduction, class and bottle design.
