A day at the sea

As a big fan of Hermès, I had to test of course also the Merveilles - series.
"Eau des Merveilles | Hermès" has pleased me very well.
This particular fragrance, awakens longing for the sea in me, I do not know why, he has in the fragrance pyramid no aquatic notes.
But I spray it on, I feel this pull in the stomach, this longing for the beach, the view of the sea. I want to go back, sit in the sand and enjoy the tranquility.
There is dry driftwood everywhere, scattered dried seaweed and shell casings. I look out to sea, It is slightly cloudy and not hot. The seagulls fly their rounds over the foaming sea.
Eau des Merveilles - water of wonder. Yes, that fits. It is a miracle.
This fragrance gives me peace and serenity, it grounds me and gives me peace.

Rinse it on, I smell first fresh, delicately citrus impacts, but not like freshly cut citrus fruit but ehr like their abrasion, slightly sweet and not bitter.
Likewise, I immediately perceive a slight woodiness. Dry, like the driftwood on the beach. The pepper is very well perceived, brings a small, peppery kick that is also present for some time.
The woody base is so nicely tuned, tart, slightly herbaceous, woody and needley but neither too woody nor too dry.
The durability is really good, the base is even after 10 h still delicately perceptible the sillage thereby is not very strong, however, at a distance of 1m well smellable.
Eau des Merveilles is something special. Certainly not a fragrance that pleases every woman. No florality, no sweetness. For me, however, just right.

Melancholy in a bottle

My first encounter with this fragrance was rather difficult, as I was probably expecting a tangy, fruity opening based on the top notes and the fruity look of the bottle. Instead, the first word that popped into my head was "depression". The thirst struck me as much woodier than I expected, so I guess I was a little disappointed at first. After the fragrance had spent some time in my bathroom cabinet, the weather was getting colder again, I wanted to try Merveilles again and lo and behold, the Durft complemented the somewhat chilly, rainy weather perfectly and enveloped me in a kind of melancholy. Funny, but for me this scent really only comes into play in bad, cool weather because it just goes with it!
Eau des merveilles definitely passes as a unisex fragrance and highlights a melancholic aura. I think everyone has days when you're just not super in a good mood, talkative and ready for a celebration, yet not insanely bad-tempered, but just neutral and maybe even a little mentally absent duch the day goes and exactly on such days hits the mark for me Eau des Merveilles! Definitely a very special scent that I have taken to my heart in a strange way. Oakmoss, fir, cedar and something else herbaceous (which are actually in the base) I think I can smell out fairly early on. The orange and lemon can be perceived rather as abrasion, as one uses it for cooking.

Village pharmacy

I smell that scent and I'm catapulted back to my childhood... in the small village pharmacy. Frau Klee, the friendly, but for me as a child in Bavaria always somewhat stiff-looking pharmacist, due to her High German expression, stands perfectly permed behind the counter. Behind Mrs. Klee are neatly lined up big brown pharmacy glasses with Latin inscriptions. What essences has she hidden in them? Why does it smell so strange here - so "healthy"? Actually not important, the main thing is that she gives me a portion of delicious dextrose as a farewell gift. Orange and lemon is my favourite :)

Winter is coming

I guess I'm a late bloomer when it comes to perfume. After a few young girlish experiments I had put the subject aside for years. Until that day, when my mother returned a borrowed scarf while walking after a visit. Later I wanted to put it away and hesitated - because it smelled! Every movement of the fabric filled the room with a wonderful magic.

Until then I had often perceived perfumes as annoying, intrusive or headache-prone, but with this fragrance it was different. Something has clicked into my mouth at this moment, with a satisfying, full-sounding KATSCHUNNKK! - this scent was MY! Where's the phone?
"Oh, you like this one? I just got it for free, but it's not my case. You can have it!"

What is it about this fragrance that appeals to me? I don't even want to try to crumble the individual scent elements, others can do that much better here. And especially in this case I don't want to analyse that at all, here I prefer to preserve the overall effect that this fragrance has on me. A scent in which I still find the heat of an almost past summer, but early in the morning there is already a mysterious fog on the fields, it smells a bit like autumn. Winter is coming. Wonderfully unsweet and free from non-binding flowering. Seriously, but not harsh or rude, a melancholic scent. And somehow right. It's for me.

Meanwhile, I wear the scent less often. Not because I like it less than before, on the contrary. If I wear it daily, I take it was less clear, it "disappears" then for my nose, and I still want it to remain something special. Hach. Enough raving. Thanks for reading.

Pleasant and elegant

The perfume opens with fresh, sweet citrus, accompanied by sweet spices. It is a fresh, sharp smell. It takes your breath away in a pleasant way.
In the middle of the composition there is violet, a sweet one, full of spices. It is a spicy fragrance. St this point I get a soapy smell. The smell is fresh and clean and it gives a sort of purity to the perfume. It is a rich and elegant fragrance, full of spirit and personality.
The base is sweeter but it still has a soapy hint.
This is a great fragrance for work. It can’t disturb anyone. Is nice, clean, pleasant and elegant. You can’t go wrong with it. Everyone should have in its wardrobe this kind of perfume.

Eau de Merveilles

Too many samples, too many perfumes I only half like, means I am on a 'use it or lose it' kick (a.k.a. tidying up my perfume stash).

This week I tried Eau des Merveilles for the last time; I'm halfway through my second carded sample and won't be finishing the vial.

The opening has a zing of juicy lemon loaded with fresh black pepper. A minute or two later a very soapy musk, and a strange velvety wood join the fray. The whole at this stage has a luminous quality.

The soapy musk and a strange artificial smelling wood grow ever stronger; I can smell, taste this fragrance everywhere.

The scent hangs in the air all day (two sprays from a manufacturer's carded sample) making me feel like I have been smoked in perfume as the smell pours from my hair, my fingernails; its in my nose, my mouth, my clothes; it follows me around and I find it overwhelming.

Maybe I am sensitive to certain manufactured aromachemicals but I find this very artificial and suffocating, overly strong, diffusive, pervasive, and tenacious.

The upside-down fragrance...

Eau des Merveilles by Hermès is a lovely fragrance, if not slightly unusual in that it has an upside-down note pyramid! You start out with the woody notes, which Hermès calls the "The Spirit of Wood", consisting of resins, balsams, woods (cedar and oak) and vetiver. Then comes the heart of the fragrance (which Hermès calls "The Memory of the Ocean") consisting of Ambergirs... that wonderful material which comes from the belly of a whale and which smells salty, musky and sweet all at the same time! the perfumer here, Ralf Schwieger, wanted to create a fragrance which centred around this note... and I must admit it smells beautiful! It smells of the sea, with the salty air and also has a musky quality which blends really well on skin, almost like a "second-skin" type of scent. Then finally the dry-down (called "The Sparkle of a Constellation"), a sweet pairing of lemon and orange, followed by a spicy mixture of cardamom, black & pink pepper. This is a very unusual ending for a fragrance, but it somehow lasts a long time on skin, blending really well.

My impression is almost like someone sitting on a beach eating an orange. I really like it actually. it's also very unisex (no flowers are involved in the composition), but it is also quite feminine at the same time! Apparently this was the last fragrance made before Jean-Claude Ellena arrived at Hermès (although he later made the flankers to this one, including the Eau de Parfum).

I would say that anyone could wear this one, it's a very "happy" fragrance (the name means "Water of Wonders"), and there is something quite happy and magical about it, like fireworks in a bottle. I would say this version (the Eau de Toilette) is perfect for summer and the warmer months, although it could probably be worn at any time of year, but just sitting closer to the skin. Pure sunshine and fireworks in a bottle! If you like casual, happy, but unique or "different" smelling perfumes... then give this one a try!

Happy Skin Scent

It opens with a blast of Orange. A very happy orange scent! Within fifteen minutes, it settles into a lovely skin scent: sweet, salty, happy. A beautiful scent for any season.

Salty-Sweet Orange, Amber-tinged Cedar

It's easy to see why so many people love Hermès EAU DES MERVEILLES. It's citrus without being acidic. It's complex without being complicated. It's simultaneously gorgeous and subtle. It is also completely appropriate for any and every occasion and is fully unisex.

The orange scent is less insistent that this house's ORANGE VERTE cologne and concentrée versions. It's also a bit sweeter than those. Rather than a bright green orange, this orange is more ripe but without being sugary. At the same time, there is a decidedly salty quality to this composition. It reminds me of the taste of salt on one's lips after having swimmed in the ocean. Or better yet, imagine pulling up a chair at a beachside cafe for a cold glass of orange juice right after a swim. The saltiness adds just a touch of taste to the orange as it crosses your lips. Another possible comparison might be the salty-sweet quality of kettle corn, although there is no corn scent here whatsoever ... and there is unmistakable orange!

The cedar is the most dominant wood scent in this composition, and happily there is no overwhelming blast of aromachemicals here. Sure, there are aromachemicals present, but they are judiciously measured so that the orange and the cedar really do shine through from start to finish. Not only that but they have a sparkly quality, just like the design on the super nice bottle, which is covered with specks of silver, giving off the impression of light.

All in all, a quite likable creation, more so than most of the JARDIN series, to my nose. I have to admit, though, that my favorite of this series is the ELIXIR, which is much richer, living up splendidly to its name. Of course, EAU DES MERVEILLES is also well-named, because this really does feel like an eau. In fact, it's perfect for hot weather for that reason, although it can be worn any other time as well.

Anyone who is scared off by blindingly bright citrus colognes might want to give this a try to see how else orange can be done.

Slightly masculine, salty orange and dry woods

Eau des Merveilles kept me intrigued for years as I could never manage to find a tester bottle. I worked this fragrance up in my mind to be something utterly spectacular, a masterpiece and a modern classic. Well, I like this fragrance, I really do, but it's not something that struck me down like lightning.

It's essentially dry, warm and strangely crisp, lemon and orange on a woodsy and peppery base. Very unusual I must say, but also something that relies on the right skin chemistry to make it work.

I'd love to layer this scent over another fragrance, because on its own I feel like it's missing something. It reminds me of the beach and scorching hot Summer weather, yet I crave a subtle hint of floral notes or a touch of sweetness to make it that little more complex and feminine.

I can certainly understand why men would want to wear this. Honestly, it has a very unisex feel. Whenever I smell Eau des Merveilles I am impressed, but I can't help wishing that this fragrance was a little more outrageous. The bottle makes me think of the solar system, a world so different from our own and I guess I wanted Eau des Merveilles to reflect that.

The sillage is quite good, yet nowhere near being a heavy hitter. I'm rather glad because the peppery orange on its own is a little harsh in its already rather subtle concentration. The longevity is so-so, not incredibly long lasting but sufficient to say the least.

All in all, Eau des Merveilles is certainly unique and one of a kind. The dryness and saltiness in this fragrance is quite lovable, however my only issue is that it tends to be more masculine than feminine to my nose.
