The small store in 2023

Here with us, there is a magical no store called "Bittersweet".
In addition to fresh food and a well-stocked assortment of natural cosmetics, you can also find lots of scented oils, candles and incense.

Rose Water & Vanilla awakens in me the scent memory of just this very fine store. His Duftaura acts meditative, almost esoteric.

Christine Nagel has already created a number of special fragrances for Jo Malone. This one, however, is even more extraordinary. The combination of vanilla, rose, oud and sweet notes makes this fragrance something simple and at the same time ingenious.

Have you Ever Danced with the Devil in the Pale Moonlight?

No? He would probably leave a trail of this scent first and then once he's got you trapped...enraptured with this seductive scent...the traditional brimstone and sulfur would appear. As I sniff my wrist, I think of all those vampire legends which describe the immortals as smelling of Roses and I feel that Jo Malone's Rose Water & Vanilla has captured that haunting otherworldly aspect of the rose water. This fragrance is seductive, though not overwhelming, lasting a good 6 hours on my skin but with sillage less than 1 meter. There is a definite incense accord and is slightly sweetened by a persistent loukhoum note. There is also a touch of orange blossom, honeysuckle and finally a deep earthy natural vanilla bourbon note that reminds me of the fresh black innards of a still moist Tahitian Vanilla bean pod I bought on the shores of Moorea'a for the equivalent of 3 cents. My mind keeps flashing back to "Spencer's Gift and Gag Store" circa 1975 Americana-black lights, lava lamps and "Midnight Strawberry Orchid Incense". Not to be mistaken with todays clearly defined orchid notes or synthetic strawberries, this is very natural, not cloying. It smells very similar to my beloved "Lovely Jubblies Cream" from Lush. This is probably the most earthy, low key and yet alluring rosewater scent I have come across, given roses are not my thing and I am no expert in this area...but this Rose water and vanilla is almost like a religious experience, the wave of an ancient incense ball and incantation before some weird unspeakable psychedelic ritual which hopefully ends with soothing music and massage.
