Thornyhold: a Bewitching Tale
Approaching Halloween seems like the perfect time to discuss this magical story, which is as unbelievable as the pre-Hogwarts school of witchcraft. The rambling house called Thornyhold is like something out of a fairy tale. There is a friendly face in the childhood memories of Gilly Ramsey, a fairy-godmother who has the power to materialize in moments of most significant unhappiness and loneliness. This distant and charitable figure bequeaths a cottage in Wiltshire, Thornyhold, to Gilly. The house, set deep in a wildwood, has come just in time to save her from a bleak future. Thus begins the magical adventure: a series of discoveries and encounters reveal to the girl unknown and enchanted places, where every woman is perhaps also a witch. Black cats always have a secret to tell, and passions flare up unexpectedly. With its tufts of rosy houseleek and the spreading gilt of the lichens, the old house offers her a chance to start over. It's got yew and juniper at the southwest corner of the house, and there's ash and rowan, a bay tree, and then the quickthorn hedge with some of the holy thorn Glastonbury planted amongst it. And, of course, elder trees.

Secret Wood is like a still-room with potpourri, lotions and potions made from herbals to keep out evil. It belongs to the green, aromatic, and woody family and features a lot of spicy, woody, and balmy accords, which evoke the tremendous and mysterious forests of the world. What a wonderful green and sparkling scent! It is one of the best and unique things I have ever smelled. So aromatic, so lively, so seductive and extravagant. It's a riot of resins, vetiver, patchouli and fabulous blonde woods combined, a beautiful blend of so many beautiful notes. Woody, spicy and herbaceous, and it also has a delicious and delicate creaminess.

The story begins with an explosion of green and resinous notes. The fir balsam of the base stands out a lot. It is fresh, aromatic, soothing. The green of absinthe meets the spiciness of warm cinnamon, the sweetness of nutmeg and the hardness of cloves. Yes, as I have already said, there is a sensational presence of spices in this essence. But absinthe is not solitary, and soon a glorious geranium, rosy and leafy, joins it. Among that rich blend, it's hard enough for me to capture the citrusy note of bergamot, if any.

The heart blooms with a plethora of woods, practically a mixture of blond woods. There's a creamier side with sandalwood and cashmere, a more grounded side with a mix of different vetivers, and a drier side with cedar shavings. It almost seems to me to walk in a wild forest. The barks and the trees' needles cover the damp ground, and with every step, the barks break under my feet, releasing this intense and warm scent of the woods.

As for the other perfumes of the same collection, even this one does not change much during its lifetime. Anyway, the more it approaches the dry-down phase, the more it gets balmy, dark, and warm. The balsam fir now stands out, supported by an earthy patch, not too dirty, just deep and thick—black vanilla sweets the base, with a spicy touch not at all gourmand.

Secret Wood is a beautifully assembled scent, and I recommend it. I would wear it on a special occasion, evening and night out. The presence of spices and woods makes it suitable for bitter days, fall months. Excellent longevity and moderate sillage, the perfect combination for a personal skin scent. Have you smelled this perfume?—I'd love to learn what others think of Secret Wood.

I base the review on a 50ml bottle I have owned since October 2021.

Oh man, this is niche! Seriously. An outbreak of dark spices blurs the citrus and floral aspect, and the touch of the warm woods is sublime.
