As touching as "Un bel di vedremo" Puccini's Madame Butterfly aria
To begin with, I don't know if there is a reason why some scents recall memories or fantasies in one's mind, yet when I smelt Amazing Lang Lang the first time and I closed my eyes, I figured out myself walking within the white houses of a Greek village, the notes of Puccini's M.me Butterfly "Un bel di vedremo" coming from a terrasse, and the warm sea breeze pleasantly smelling of zesty fruits, white blossoms, and wet woodies... if this is a dream, I don't wanna wake up for a while.
It was nearly the end of August and those are the last summer's days sale in Italy. I was attracted by the up to 50% discount at Sephora and found this unknown scent on the shelf, there was just one left. The twisted bottle with a piano-shaped cup was pretty enticing so I decided to test the juice inside. I sprayed twice on a paper strip, smelled quickly and put it into one of my shopping bags. It was a while later that from time to time a nice, pleasant, soothing, and relaxing smell was reaching my nostril... is that me? Ouch, that smell was coming from my bag. You know what? Since I already left the mall that day, the very next day I went back to Sephora and luckily bought the last big bottle! A scarce and quite expensive jewel, made by one of the favs perfumers of mine Nathalie Lorson, it's now mine.
Amazing Lang Lang opens up with sharp and vibrant bergamot, a tad of leafy green tea that does not cover the other notes, and a faint touch of pepper, with the rich smell of May's blossoming jasmine, the blast you get in the evening when the sun sets and the delicate evening breeze caresses the with blossoms. Initially, I was misled by the jasmine quality, and I confused it with a sort of violet leaves, a note that has an aquatic vibe. Instead, all of the opening notes around a major chord of spicy, woody jasmine. Jasmine was the obvious choice as a tribute to Chinese nature and is the flower which has a special place in Lang Lang’s heart.
Then comes the heart that proposes subtle jasmine blended with virile green geranium leaves and aromatic lavender. In this stage, the cologne remains fresh, a bit metallic on my skin, whereas it is more floral on a paper strip.
This stage is built around a major chord of spicy, woody jasmine, well balanced with the resinous cistus. Jasmine was the obvious choice as a tribute to Chinese nature and is the efflorescence which has a special place in Lang Lang’s heart.
The dry down is all about woody and rooty accords, manliness here is presented with tasteful and classy notes of vetiver and cedar, highlighted by the sensuality of kyara wood and gaïac wood. I did research, Kyara/Kynam/Kinam is a tiny subset within aloeswoods in a very very small percentage. In a historical context, it refers to a special type/grade of aloeswood with unique and excellent fragrance properties. In other words, it is a sort of oud from a different wood, less resinous and medicinal in the smell.
This masculine perfume has it all, spicy and aromatic, woody and floral at the same time. Energy and volubility, expressed by citrus notes, excited by black pepper and calmed by an alliance of sensual flowers and woods. The accords, the performance, and the outcome make this cologne flawless for wearing at the office, a daytime scent, marvelous in springtime, yet I would give it a try in autumn. I sprayed it 8am this morning, it is barely 6pm and I still catch whiff every now and then. I don't see a target range, any person of any age could wear it.
