the noble truffle among the Patchoulis
I love patchouli fragrances: the more earthy and felt thicker, creamier - the better!
Recently I have come across some very great fragrances of this kind, such as "Patchouli" from this brand: a real niche with "costume jewellery", a lot of glittering frills and exquisite fragrance compositions based in Brussels.
In contrast to all the glitter and pseudo-glamour, the fragrances, already with their straight-lined flacons, captivate with a kind of purism that appeals to me.
I expressed myself already enthusiastically at suitable place in addition.

Also in "Patchouli Ancien" the fertile soil under the trees seems moist and heavy and mossy; spicy woody and slightly fungal aroma pregnant fragrance emerges from it.
The truffle pig buries its trunk deep into this deliciously scented soil; its satisfied grunt indicates: it has found what "rich soil"!
Now it's hot: react quickly, otherwise this noble delicacy is devoured and the whole game of dark green-brown was in vain.
"Patchouli Ancien" reminds me of one of these exquisite truffles: I love this noble earthiness in fragrance and taste.
(I would like to grunt happily at a dish with rasped truffles!)

Here Patchouli and again and again Patchouli is surrounded by much dark, almost mysterious spice:
Myrtle, so magical in its blossom, meets silky-silvery cedarwood chords and resinous-smoky myrrh.
A deep dark feeling of well-being with golden flashing is already spreading.
Tree moss and the sensual addition of sandalwood underline this charm, before musk and vanilla set bright light points.
The naturally golden-brown Pachouli fragrance is surrounded in "Patchouli Ancien" with rich malachite green and many earthy shades before the final yellowish lights, like little fireflies, appear.

Powerful fragrance, sensual and earthy, seemingly simply "knitted" and yet with a lot of refinement, this patchouli delicacy shows itself!
It wants to be appreciated accordingly, but at the same time reminds us that aromatic truffle enjoyment should not be an everyday occurrence either.
(Even if it would be possible without further ado; tasty, as these dark tubers are).

So "Patchouli Ancien" will stay with me as a special delicacy.
You don't treat yourself to anything else!

Patchouli ledert
The label "Les Ecuadors" may be counted as part of the category "sloping niche". It starts with its localization. Brussels! French fragrances, good, but who wears Belgian?

If you look at the rather hand-knitted website of the company (hand-knitted, even if it doesn't come close to Harry Lehmann's bizarre matrix trigger aesthetics), you'll learn, that the brothers Marino and Demetrio Fato and their uncle Djorda (here there seems to be an Italian-South Slavic melange, possibly from Istria) opened the first of the (meanwhile probably three) Brussels Les Ecuadores shops in 1987 in the expensive Galerie du Roi; the assortment consists of costume jewellery, scents and candles, all homemade. The name "Les Ecuadors" is supposed to refer to an early modern Indian caravel of which I have never heard before.

There are currently nine fragrances on offer; three of them, including "Patchouli Ancien", have now been declared EdP, the other six are EdPs. The price for 100 ml is between 50 and 60 euros, which are fair announcements and suggest that the Fato family still has old and therefore cheap commercial rental contracts, or other sources of income.

Strangely enough, three of the nine existing waters are Patschulis, we have "Patchouli", "Patchouli Ancien" and, very original, "Patchoulissimo". The comments on all three here on Parfumo read quite similarly, so at "Les Ecuadors" one doesn't seem to shy away from repeating good things in variation, originality at any price is not capitalized. I don't know the other two, maybe that will change, I will have to go to Brussels soon...

The advertising signets to the fragrances are of an already again sympathetic dilettantism; exemplarily we can lead ourselves for this here, for the "Patchouli Ancien", what one could perhaps best translate with "patchouli of that time", to mind:

Voilà: A blonde Swedish beauty looks at us in a mysterious and sensual way, in front of a macramé curtain, dressed in a kind of lambskin, and across it there are colourful Pril peel-off sticky flowers, underneath a garish pink Pdydellic "Patchouli-Ancien" lettering. It's awesome! In the accompanying text, the hippie era and female secrets are mentioned several times.

The flower power epoch and its patschulism were ahead of my time, but that's not how I imagine it to be, but olfactorically much sweeter, more pompous and more luxuriant. And I don't find this fragrance particularly feminine either, but unisex with a tendency towards the masculine. I can imagine that I would also like him very much in a young woman, but I do not imagine a blond hippie girl, but rather a harsh big city beauty (perhaps from the left scene) with leather jacket and sturdy shoes.

So if the traces of "hippie" and "feminine" are misleading in my opinion, then the colour of the fragrance leads exactly to the goal: Regardless of what the Fatos really put into it, for me "Patchouli Ancien" smells as deep dark brown as it looks: After all bitter forest honey. Rum. For tree resin. Earth. Old leather. After dark vanilla pod. A little old-fashioned. A little even after smoke. Herb, somewhat animalistic, of a bitter sweetness (the sweetness very reserved). This is a clear, straight, beautiful, unambiguous fragrance. I really like that.

Patchouli Ancien is a heavy fragrance in terms of its characteristics, but in terms of durability and projection it is quite within the limits. I can't make out a big development - a linear one in the sense of a loaner. I can't make out burnt, musty or otherwise unattractive notes that some people have noticed here. Of course, you can't always have anything against this dark, bitter, strongly organic one: I'm afraid that's the case with the little nose on my side. Therefore and only therefore P.A. does not come with me as purchase candidate into the closer choice.
