A Rose In Blue
Which are the fragrances that should deserve more of our attention: the cheeky, the spectacular, the blockbusters? Or the less noisy, the elegant - just that kind of perfume that first has to be conquered by its wearer?

Indigo by Spyros Drosopoulos is such a fragrance. During its creation, attributes like harmony, wearability and elegance may have played a bigger role than superficial show effects. And you can suppose show effects to many perfumes where a grand, opulent rose is put in place.

Indigo is different: the Indigo rose is fresh, sourish-piquante, and could almost be called fruity. She has green parts, and she lies on a bed of dry amber notes which does not allow excessive suasiveness.

But Indigo makes demands. One cannot swallow it like a glass of beer or liquor – you have to taste it like a good wine or cognac. Translated into perfume speech this means: Get your nose off your wrist! There, everything is bitter and tart, confusing and without any beauty. This beautiful fragrance fits together only within its projection.

You will have to be patient enough to let this fragrance drift to you – fanning would also be allowed so in a way you could trace some of the scent molecules. Whatever then reveals itself as a pleasant chill or distance is being described on the perfumer's site spot on by the picture of a well air-conditioned maisonette apartment during brutal summer heat.

IMHO, the variety of rose notes belong to the most memorable scents we know – you may very easily get too much of it. Indigo faces this problem in two ways. At first, for a long time Indigo fits together well only in its projection, and so this fine fragrance eludes again and again. And secondly, after about 2 hours the rose note collapses - which may indicate the use of a natural rose oil.

This moment of collapse is being described on the perfumer's site as the moment where the windows of that maisonette are opened. Dry summer heat, but also the hot smoky fumes of the big city penetrate us now. This is a moment of transition within Indigo's development. From now on, only the dry amber accord determines the events almost on its own. There is only a very weak yellowish floral leftover which remotely reminds me of broom – the hyacinthe? By hindsight we realize that this note with its sharpness and freshness might have been responsible for a good deal of the rose's liveliness.

Now comes the time of the snoopers. Finally, the nose may touch the wrist since the base notes more or less completely dries down to the skin. Until it is completely faded away, the olfactory sense is getting a break – and so we will be ready for another adventure just on the same day.

Indigo is definitely not for perfume beginners. Whoever looks at roses for the first time will very easily feel attracted the most by the grand and splendid roses. But honestly: who is able to expose himself daily to the splendour of a Rose Barbare, Black Tie or Black Oud? To know about this circumstance is the prerequisite necessary to appreciate this cool, indigo blue rose. Nobody call this rose a weakling, this amber accord a bore – Indigo was created for the arts, not for the market.
