On the tracks of Grenouille
Attached by Apicius' commentary I got myself a sample of South. That sounded very exciting, especially since the previous comments and statements on the material seem quite heterogeneous. At the first test I would have agreed most likely to the "innocence from the country" that Lox sniffed. Really somehow soap and detergent, but then, especially when testing again and again, I could smell more and more a hint of these "nylon tights".
However, not at all in the sense of the quotation attributed to Napoleon "do not wash yourself madame, in FOUR days I will be in Paris". It smells to me rather as if Madame had washed herself after all and treated her legs with fine cream before she put on the nylon stockings and lay down in the relatively freshly made bed to await Monsieur, whereupon she fell asleep, as the gentleman had been waiting a little longer. And so she has been lying there for several hours now. (How many hours, this should vary from nose to nose)
All in all for me a very "human" scent, which therefore comes along inconspicuously in the truest sense of the word. Not like a classic perfume, where you ask yourself WHAT kind of perfume it is, but rather ask the question: "WHO smells like this here? Extremely subtle and for my nose very clearly in the pleasant corner. Absolutely no stinker but fortunately also anything but clinically pure. Thus I arrived again at Lox' statement with the "camouflage".
A really exciting fragrance for my sensation.
Shelf life and silage are, according to the "camouflage", reserved but nevertheless present. If they were "louder" it would not fit at all.
I see... Can someone describe to me how carrot seeds smell?

Did Someone Call The Doctor?...
South opens with a moderately sweet, almost transparent accord before quickly moving to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart the sweetness drops to a more modest level, as a slightly sharp, clinical gauze-like synthetic fresh accord takes over. As the composition moves further through its middle, the gauze-like synthetic fresh accord adds in subtle spice and underlying natural smelling vague woods. During the late dry-down the clinical fresh accord gradually recedes as the now semi-transparent woods hang on through the finish. Projection is average and longevity below average at about 5 hours on skin.

The first time I tried South on skin for an early read I described the experience rather negatively as smelling like "odd spice". Just like anything else, first impressions don't always prove true and I would say "odd spice" really is not the best descriptor of what I smell now with a full wearing. Instead, the best descriptor of the key heart accord is a very fresh, clinical, gauze-like rubbing alcohol experience. When wearing South, I almost feel like I was in a hospital or doctor's office, smelling the alcohol laden swabs and other sanitized instruments throughout. This sounds a lot worse than it is, and in fact there really is nothing wrong with the composition as I find it pretty mundane and easy to wear. The only question I have is "Would I want to smell like I just came out of a hospital or doctor's office?" In my case, the answer is a pretty solid, "No." The rubbing alcohol aspect coupled with the house trademark poor performance metrics (save, Le Mat) make South a rather benign, but unwanted composition that just doesn't seem to fit in with the "real world". The bottom line is the 185 Euro per 100ml bottle South is a competent release by Mendittorosa, but one that needs some warmth and heart, earning an above average 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5 and a neutral recommendation with a positive bias.

A Skin Scent of a Certain Kind
I was shocked when I had found South by Menditorossa recently. I can only wonder what people are buying. By no means one should have the expectation that this perfume should be beautiful in an aesthetic way.

Forget water and soap – South smells human. South is stale and insipid – but also as intimate as the smell of old sweat can be. The first picture I got was that of worn nylon stockings. That may be attractive for some people, but I won't follow here. These are not the salty and animalic aspects of fresh sweat that we sometimes refer to as indolic notes.

This scent experience lasted for three or four hours on my skin. Then, in the final drydown, a certain resinous note showed up. After all, South is quite homogeneous, and it is not easy to split up into separate notes. I'd rather not say that this unpleasant experience had something to do with skin chemistry. On a test strip, South smelled quite the same. However, I tested it at a Parfumo meeting, and my opinion was not shared by all.

Should Menditorossa get panned for launching such a fragrance? IMHO – no. Niche fragrances may be a bit experimental and not everybody's darling. But my experience was worlds apart from how Menditorossa presents South on their website: warm bread, sun-bleached linnen, pure soap from Marseille. Nothing of that for me!

Napoleon Bonaparte might have chosen South as a gift for his beloved Josephine. Remember: “Do not wash yourself, Madame, I'll be in Paris within four days!”
