Very Simplistic, But Sometimes Simple Just Works...
Terre de Bois opens with very quick zing of near-transparent vetiver before a dominant lemon verbena note takes hold and remains into the scent's heart notes with the vetiver later acting as its backbone. The lemon verbena comes off as a lemon citrus and floral hybrid, with a very soapy undertone. There is just the faintest hint of mild spice backing up this sublime minimalist concoction. Projection is below average to average, while longevity is quite tenacious.

Terre de Bois is a rather simplistic composition. That said, complexity is not required to smell good, and make no mistake Terre de Bois definitely does. The vetiver used in it is of the non-smoky variety, and it melds with the lemon verbena perfectly, forming a very fresh and clean combo that is a perfect scent for warmer temperatures. It is relatively subtle, so if you are looking for a powerhouse scent keep looking. That said, for those looking for a nice easy to wear scent with excellent execution, I can highly recommend this one! 4 stars out of 5.

Reinvented eau de cologne
If you started an equilateral triangle with Chanel Pour Monsieur and Comme des Garcons Vettiveru, the third point would be Terre de Bois. It's a scratchy, woody take on the eau de cologne. The blustery, citric-sage start is a bit misleading. Terre de Bois goes quiet very quickly, but can be sensed up close for hours. The name nails it though. There's the feel of soil from the patchouli and the woody tone of the vetiver. The herbs enhance both, and the feel is specific; not leafy, not grassy, not mossy. Just dirt and trees.

TdB smells 'natural' in that all of its parts are recognizably botanical, but it has a very balanced use of its elements. Nothing vague or blurred.

At a glance, TdB is autumnal and handsome. I bet it'd be wonderful against type in a frilly-pretty springtime setting.

Twangy, Tangy Galbanum with Rough-cut Vetiver
Love of galbanum is a prerequisite to appreciation of Miller Harris TERRE DE BOIS, which packs a punch of the stuff, along with sage and enough verbena to make this a pretty tangy and invigorating mix. This is a rough-edged cologne, with raw vetiver and herbs, including fennel and juniper, mingling in a provocative way. I do believe that the cotton candy note listed above is a mistake: this is not sweet in the least!

TERRE DE BOIS is sharp and strong enough to constitute an energizing form of aromatherapy, but I think that because of the tanginess it's a must try before you buy, since not everyone's skin is going to take to this composition well. For those who like bracing colognes with strong green undertones interacting with vetiver, TERRE DE BOIS will be a winner, I am sure, provided that their skin is compatible with the tangy edge.

I have seen this creation classified elsewhere as a masculine cologne, and I do believe that it is more masculine than feminine, though I have really enjoyed wearing it several times myself, thanks to the generous manufacturer's carded sample sent to me by a fellow fragrance traveler, who apparently lives down the street from this British perfume house. Lucky her! (-;

My widest smile
A breath of moss-fresh day and soft moonlight at dawn clouds my senses. Weak notes of wet wood and breaking forest soil pass by. Where am I? How did I get here? I am in the middle of a light wooded hill in an unknown area. The wind hums a bright song, gives a subtle concert together with leaves and grasses. In the distance, in soft grey tones with a silvery shimmering silhouette, I recognize another hill. Further down, wafts of mist. Around me old, bony deciduous wood, occupied by lichens since eternity. The light fringe around the big hill becomes more intense and again I hear shreds of a distant melody. Bright, light, from a forgotten time and yet somehow familiar. Similarly familiar as this seemingly original nature, powerful, impressive, balanced.

Again this song sounds from far away, now clearer, clearer. I feel a draught behind me, turn around, hear a voice, spherical like echo. What I perceive, I can not classify, evaluate. The impressions go beyond all my previous experiences. I almost feel like a child, recording everything. Again the wind blows sounds to my ear which seem to fascinate me. Again I feel a draft of air like a light vortex in the center of which I am. Leaves move, the morning haze dances with them. What seems almost ghostly leaves me amazingly calm. It is the voice, meanwhile several times overlaid in the interplay with the wind. A whisper, whispering, familiar even without understanding a word. I know you, but I don't recognize you. In the meantime, it has become light. In the morning dew spider webs glisten, the voice I locate now in the haze down in the valley.

I stomp down over the soft forest floor into the fog. I'm tempted. I have no explanation. Almost magically magnetic I move step by step purposefully into the white nothingness, curious like never before. And again the wind sweeps around me and breathes my name into my ear. Now I recognize the voice. It's my favorite fairy. The fog lifts and before it completely disappears, I suddenly feel strangely warm. I am briefly blinded and wake up with a wide smile.

Citrus, fresh green herbs... and a little sugar
Terre de Bois takes the Citrus/Verbena classic Eau de Cologne formula and tweaks it just a little... but enough to make it different and certainly interesting!

Immediately I get a lot of Citrus, Verbena and Vetiver... but it's also soft and slightly warm and sweet, with the addition of Galbanum to give it depth (think Chanel no. 19). The Vetiver and Herbs and Juniper are not loud or in-your-face. Instead they are very subdued and soft. The overall effect is very nice.

What I also love about this is the sweetness of it (the cotton candy note), this lifts up the perfume and gives it a nice, different take. I certainly like it, but my only complaint so far is that (even though I'm reviewing the Eau de Parfum), it doesn't last quite long on my skin, so I have to keep reapplying almost as if it were an Eau de Cologne. Either way, this is my first Miller Harris testing, I like what I've smelled here... and I will definitely expect many more good things from this house in the future!
