Smells like particle physics
There it is, the beguiling solidity of skin and self, inviting a spray of Violet Fumée. Immediately the frank simplicity of limpid florals (I must especially declare the delightful unfurling of such a natural and fresh Turkish rose) with the moist crisp apple vitality of their surrounding leaves radiating realness. Violets peep and shrink as violets will.

Melding resins resonate - distracted as I was by genteel florals I’m not sure I noticed them descend effortlessly into my skin, but from there they pulse, their wave forms aligning with mine, now canceling, now amplifying my own. And there it is, a perceptual shift, the solidity of skin dissolves and the apparent substantiality of body is unmasked as permeable charged space. I am released.

The naturalistic and the ethereal dance in the sillage: this fragrance simultaneously offers the convincing perception of a blue mantle sky drawn as a containing dome around the world whilst it does not for a moment deny that the universe hurtles expansively and endlessly outward.

Violet Fumée affords the experience of an atom’s awareness of its nanoparticles, or of a star’s wink of recognition as chemistry morphs into biology on a rock in a distant galaxy.

It’s a hard one to speak of in earth language, but I’ll try. It’s like the most wonderful gathering of friends you could arrange, with your dearest ones all mingling and enjoying one another whilst delighting in the most tempting morsels and refreshments. They are all rapturously present in the space - in energy and laughter - you are aware of them all, but they are never simultaneously in front of you.

In musical terms: a chamber ensemble. It lacks any explosive percussion, bass or brass; but every yearning of the soul is given full voice with sigh of strings and breath of woodwind.

Clearly, for me Violet Fumée tends aesthetic, poetic, poignant, poised. It is a salon scent: intimate, blissful. Sparse, spacious; yet full, satisfying.

In technical terms, the palette of notes is judiciously selected, and for each component the evaporation arcs and ingredient concentrations are beautifully managed - the effect is that aromas weave in and out for the life of the fragrance with nothing dominating, demanding or untimely departing. It spirals around me as I wear it.

I got this fragrance from someone it didn’t work for. As always, everything is relative.

A Violet like no other.
A violet like no other. I think I'm finally "getting" the Les Nombres collection. They may have simple names which let us think it's centered around a particular note. Which is not the case at all. Vanille is not a stereotypical gourmand vanilla, Tuberose is like no other tuberose scent and Violette Fumee is like no other violet scent I've come across. I thought Lez Nez's Unicorn Spell and CDG Stephen Jones were different and unique takes on violet. Mona di Orio's Violet Fumee pretty much blazes past these and leaves them in her smoke, in terms of originality. This really has to be sat down with and taken time with to enjoy, it's complex and does not reveal it's entirety in the first half hour. I agree that it's opening reminds me alot of Cristalle and the like. Cristalle opens cold and unreachable on me, just like Violette Fumee did. I know perfectly well what clary sage smells like now, the leathery note was clearly in the icy herbal opening. However, making friends does take time and I was patient. My faith was well-placed and with time, the chill air left and I was greeted with a fresh violet with its leaves still green and perky, resins and woods. I much much prefer the warmer drydown to the opening so thankfully this lasts very well on my skin with a single spritz. This is not an easy scent to like, but neither were Cristalle or No. 19 for me intially, but now is a different story from then. Violette Fumee is not for those looking for a sweet violet pastille scent. It's a decidedly unisex take on violet with a bold entrance and uncompromising quality I've come to expect from Mona di Orio. This is no shrinking violet.

A Return To Form For The Late Great Mona di Orio...
Violette Fumee opens with slightly powdery lavender coupling with mild powdery violet and relatively strong aqueous green violet leaf, with sweet honey-like opoponax rising from the base. The overall accord early-on comes off as honeyed herbal tea-like. In the early heart the starring powdery violet and aqueous violet leaf tandem remains, with the moderately honeyed now slightly powdery opoponax growing in intensity. During the late dry-down the violet leaf vacates the composition leaving traces of the remaining powdery violet flower to support the now starring powdery opoponax sans its earlier honeyed facets. Projection is below average, as is longevity at about 4 hours on skin.

I approached Violette Fumee with some trepidation after my last couple of disappointing outings from the house after Mona's untimely death. While many published notes remained elusive, what I *did* detect was a violet leaf dominant composition early-on that added some of the honeyed sweetness derived from opoponax and powder from the violet flower itself. The result is quite different smelling than I expected, with the accord coming off as a hybrid mix of slightly green mildly powdery skin lotion and honeyed herbal tea. This is an overall accord that is very difficult to describe and quite unique, smelling a lot better than it sounds. The only minor disappointment is during the late dry-down, when the opoponax base note dominates featuring its more dry resinous and powdery facets, enhanced further by the powder of the remaining violet flower. The powder level never reaches untenable levels but the overall late dry-down lacks the same level of innovation exhibited in the rest of the composition. The bottom line is the relatively expensive $330 per 100ml Les Nombres d'Or Violette Fumee with its underwhelming late dry-down and performance metrics is far from flawless, but still marks a strong return to form for the late Mona di Orio and the house bearing her namesake, earning a "very good" to "excellent" 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5.

I think my pupils dilated smelling this. An utterly gorgeous breezy violet bouquet with saffron, like sheer veils swirling in the wind.

Incognito herbal Lavender makes the Fumée in this scent. Green Violet is joined by sappy Rose. A beautiful, unique transparent scent!
