Elegant marzipan
Fashion Instinct was a blind buy, seduced by the elegance of the bottle. Something packaged so nobly simply cannot be all bad... and it's not!

The flacon is pretty impressive, very classically angular and clearcut lines, and the massive plastic lid looks noble too with it's glistening reflexes and the delicate lilac tint. All very classy.

Now to the delicate lilac contents.
Granny Smith apples, orange and red berries are supposed to form the top note. And yes, it opens with a pretty loud and gaudy fruitiness, quite a lot like boiled sweets. The apple is more or less extinguished by the orange and the red berries that are mainly raspberries. Quickly a synthetic-smelling marzipan note develops - or is it violets in combination with the strong raspberries? Or maybe amarena cherries?

No, it's marzipan all right and it becomes more natural and richer, almost buttery. But not quite.

By now the air of boiled sweets has gone and the fragrance has softened a lot. All this happening during the first ten minutes, by the way. The fruits bond with the flowers included like brother and sister. That might sound ambiguiuos - they're not trying to bash in each others faces, they are an harmonic team.

All in all this fragrance turns out to be unequivocally gourmand as the marzipan forms the centre of the lot with the other components dancing around it in a circle. I'm talking of the fruit and flower notes, as vanilla, praline, wood and musk combine (or gang up?) smoothly with the creamy heart of marzipan and give it elegance, it's not just yummy.
Fashion Instinct is surprisingly unsweet after the boiled sweets have been sucked. It is sweet, of course, but not overly so, not sickening.
And it's not quite marzipan, more almond paste with woods giving it structure and grounding.

The fragrance becomes weaker rather quickly, the staying power of the base note is pretty good though. It reminds me of a body lotion I had. But which was it? It took me a while to remember: It was a cherry-vanilla body lotion I had that smelled quite similar. It wasn't the same, but close.

Marzipan-cherry more than vanilla, a bit like heliotrope or woodruff.
