Gift of the Sea

Gave this to hubby for his birthday and he now adores it. That's me talking. What he said was he "really likes" it, which in my guy's nongushingese translates to adore. More revealing, he wore it two days in a row. There must be more notes than are listed because this is exactly what the Aegean ought to smell like if you're on a ship sailing the Greek coast. The lavender, quince heart comes through and for me makes it lean toward the bracing male scent category except it's also luxurious. Whatever's really in the top and the base completes the olfactory image of earth, water, sky. I'm going to enjoy smelling this on him. It's captivating.

Fantastic!

I got my Neil Morris sample pack this week, and me being somewhat afflicted with OCD had to start at the beginning of the alphabet with Aegean.

The start is very spicy and aromatic. Almost resinous for me, as if frankincense or myrrh, although those are not listed notes. Right away comes lovely herbs and lemon underneath. I do also detect the listed heart notes, lavender and quince, but really faintly. As it settles down it becomes very fresh and outdoorsy.

I also think it is more of a delicious masculine scent. I would definitely want to cozy up to any guy wearing this.

I did an experiment with testing after reading Sherapop's review and tried Jicky on one wrist and Aegean on the other. I agree they are very similar, although I find Jicky to be much softer, sweeter, and muskier - way more feminine than Aegean.

Jicky Goes to the Barbershop

No one else appears to be making this connection, but Neil Morris AEGEAN reminded me immediately of Guerlain JICKY. The combination of citrus, lavender, basil, sandalwood, and spice seems a lot like the skeleton or an outline of JICKY to me. Of course, this may be because my only experience of JICKY has been through the recent, emasculated reformulation, which is completely devoid of civet and other skanky elements.

Do I like this particular complex of notes? Yes and no. I definitely find this composition more masculine than feminine, whether in AEGEAN or JICKY, and I do feel that this is an easy-to-identify, distinctive perfume moment with enough of a personality to warrant attention. However, I hasten to add that I also experience something of a nineteenth-century barbershop vibe emerging out of this particular combination of notes. To me, there is a tangible Acqua di Parma COLONIA feeling here.

I would without reservation recommend this perfume for gents, but caution the ladies to try before they buy.
