A trek through the woods of Maine
Neil takes us on a trek through the magnificent and awe-inspiring woods of Maine.

Heather, grey in feel, powdery in texture arrives as the top note, with hints of sweet basil. We quickly transition to majestic fir and pine. This is not a Christmas-like fir, nay, it's the fir one experiences hiking, brushing against branches, sweet crisp scent being released. Cedar, potent, sharp and beautiful intersperses as do wafts of green, dewy fresh-cut grass. The herbal sweetness of vetiver then comes through, powerful and breathtaking. Heavenly myrrh, leathery labdanum and earthy oakmoss build the base for this scent.

fresh forest
A fresh forest scent with lemon or some kind of citrus. Something astringent is in there. Smells very fresh and green. I'm reminded of soft padding of evergreen needles underfoot and the sound of dripping water. A ghost of menthol?

I love, love the beginning of this scent, but unfortunately doesn't last too long. Afterwards some spicy powdery notes come up for me.

Spring comes to the North Woods
“A walk through the majestic north woods of Maine in early June”.
-The description of North Woods on the Neil Morris Fragrance website.

While June might be considered summer in most parts of the US, it’s still spring in the northern tier of states. North Woods captures the scent of this very specific time of year in a mixed conifer/deciduous forest. The fragrance encompasses everything from the scent of damp peaty soil to sweet, green undergrowth to the airy scent of pine needles in the forest canopy.

Even in June snow cover hasn’t been off the ground all that long so the soil is still damp and the humus of the previous year's decay creates a sweet, resinous smell. The idea that dirt can smell beautiful may seem foreign but, especially in a pine grove, its odor is deep, aromatic and intoxicating.

Moving up into the undergrowth there is a sweet, fresh galbanum quality that you may discern as the grass note listed in the pyramid. As North Woods develops, that aspect of the scent deepens to become reminiscent of a wide range of fresh, green plant life. One of those plant accords, whether intentional or not, reminds me of tansy. It's one of my favorite scent memories of northern forests. I swear, I could wear tansy as a solifore. It grows on the verge of forest and meadow and as you walk through a patch of tansy it releases a pungent, resinous, slightly camphorous galbanum accord. I’d love to know if Neil Morris created this accord intentionally.

Finally, we reach the canopy of wood and conifer accords. As much as I love conifers in a fragrance the addition of vetiver and oak adds needed dimension to North Woods. Otherwise the piny, resinous qualities would become one dimensional and monotonous.

Because Neil Morris produces fragrances in eau de parfum and parfum concentration they have a very round, warm, slightly powdery effect (perhaps from oak moss?). This gives his woody fragrances a perfumer's vision of a romantic landscape painting rather than trying to maintain the facade of a photorealistic sense/scents of place.
