Gardenia for men and women!
I love Gardenia, it's intoxicating. Neil takes the gardenia and roughens it up a bit in this iteration. There is a fleeting breath of lime and Bergamot in the top notes, which quickly transitions to the headliner - Gardenia. Now, this isn't your typical potently floral Gardenia. Nay, it's sliced with spicy, dreamy elemi; wafts of fresh cut grass and earthy hay. As the journey continues, nuances of resinous, sweet myrrh arrive, fluffed up with musk and finally made even earthier with that goddess known as Patchouli.

Faaaaabulous!
Flowers for men ... certainly not a novel idea ( JPG Fleur du Male is one that pops immediately into my head) and flowers like Rose, Jasmine and Lavender have been used in 'mens' creations for the longest time.

Herein lies the rub: if you are a man that believes florals should only be worn by women then stick to your Old Spice (which, btw, contains Jasmine, Geranium, Heliptrope and Carnation you moron) and leave smelling fabulous up to those of us who actually give a damn! As you can tell, dear reader, I have a huge problem with fragrances being stereotyped! In my youth, in the narrow-minded society in which I was raised, just the mere fact that I wore any fragrance at all classified me as being gay (which I am and always will be) and is a much more politically correct word than some of the things I have been called in my life. Discrimination hasn't stopped me from becoming a fragrance fanatic or wearing anything that I deem to smell good ... and this one does!!

This fragrance should simply be called 'Gardenia'. It is truly fabulous!! Once more, today, I am faced with the note of Elemi, which for some inexplicable reason reminds me of clean, sun drenched skin ... hopefully belonging to a lifesaver with thick, wavy dark hair, a dazzling white smile and pecs that one could break an egg on :), while his dark syrupy eyes laugh endearingly into mine ... but I digress!!!
The Gardenia here is undoubtedly the star of this fragrance ... lush, plush and sexy! Green notes provide an 'outdoorsy' feel and the Patchouli and woody notes provide a strong, earthy mien. This is the first Neil Morris fragrance that I have tried (thanks A.) and apart from the ignominious attempt at labeling it 'for men' I plan on ordering a bottle of it as soon as possible. It's glorious ...

... why should guys be excluded from smelling fabulous? This superb fragrance is simply proof that they can!!

A Fragrantic Challenge
I love the scent of gardenia – it is opulent, heady, and it can be penetrating; yet, it is gorgeous. But unfortunately, gardenia seems to be ladies' only, or at least until Neil Morris came along. Among his three Flowers for Men fragrances, the Gardenia is the most interesting.

Gardenia is hardly being used in gent's fragrances. It is listed in Caroline Hereira's 212, but all I find in there is an indefinite floral note surrounded by average chain store accords with a synthetic appeal. Also, there is the highly interesting Volo AZ 686 by Profvmvm Roma which at least can go as unisex: this very intense and long lasting perfume combines gardenia with a straightaway shoe polish note – remarkable but surely not everyone's cup of tea! The Parfumo search will list several others but none can pass as a gardenia soliflor.

So, how should a gardenia for men smell like? I can imagine this scent very well against a rugged suede leather base note. And what if gardenia would take over the floral part in a leather chypre? (I don't count in Chypre Palatin since I don't like it that much and the gardenia is not very present). Or what if accompanied by a dark but lean frankincense note? - All this is wishful thinking: We generally cannot expect distilled essences and absolutes from real plants when it comes to gardenia. I have learned that gardenia accords are being constructed by different ingredients – look for it at Perfumer's Apprentice! And if the gardenias are such composites, then I suppose it is not easy for a perfumer to combine this note with something else. Certain additions might destroy the gardenia appeal. Thus, the perfumer's creativity might be restricted.

Having said that, I can confirm that there is lots of gardenia in Flowers for Men: Gardenia! It will instantly appeal to all lovers of white flowers, regardless of gender. Neil Morris combines the gardenia with grassy notes giving it a slightly sharp and medical but still fresh appeal. It has some guts and is firm enough so men would like it. There are no dark aspects in this interpretation of gardenia, and the base is a little on the musky side. The listed oriental notes – like patchouli or myrrh – might provide some volume but are discreet enough not to dominate the fragrance. Flowers for Men: Gardenia is not a floriental. All is focussed on the Gardenia and the floral aspect is very well transformed into the base note!

Flowers for Men: Gardenia has a decent longevity of 5 hours plus. I love to wear it once in a while, preferably on a beautiful sunny day – but after these 5 hours are over, it is simply enough and I am satisfied for a few months. Gardenia for Men is somewhat demanding and anything but easy going – surely no every day office wear.

Nevertheless, I consider it one of the best creations by Neil Morris. Do not miss it if you test the Neil Morris fragrances!
