A decent flanker!
More often than not when I see a flanker of a well loved fragrance I roll my eyes to the heavens and murmur 'not another one!?!'. Then I go ahead and try it anyway, the fragrance junkie in me terrified of missing out on something good … and I experience the waves of disappointment with a knowing grimace. Not, thankfully, the case with Black XS L'Aphrodisiaque … I really wanted to like this one, and I do!
I am baffled by flankers … I find them unnecessary! Why the powers that be at Puig decided to hitch the star of L'Aphrodisiaque to the Black XS wagon is beyond me … this fragrance is quite capable of standing on it's own two feet as a new release. As a fan of the original, the flanker, L'Exces did very little for me. This one on the other hand, is fabulous.
The pop of Saffron as the juice hits the skin is innovative and unexpected to say the least, tricking the nose into thinking that this may well be the headed into Oriental territory. Upon some investigation I have noted that L'Aphrodisiaque is grouped with Leather frags, which to my nose, it really only gives a nod in the direction of. This fragrance pays homage to the marvelously dry Norlimbanol, but with the added pleasure of Orange Blossom in the mix, tempered by the woody earthiness of Nagar Motha. The nutty sweetness of Praliné is also here, but curiously becomes a little like incense. Perhaps this is due to the slight spiciness imparted by the Cinnamon. A note about the bottle : while it's great to look at (in a post modern punk sort of way) take care of those spikes around the neck … they're a little too sharp!
I've rated the silage and longevity quite high here, but the truth is that I only had about six hours of being able to smell L'Aphrodisiaque without lifting my arm to my nose. My brother did comment that I smelled great from about three feet away around this same time frame so who knows … are my projection expectations too high or do I simply stop smelling frags on myself because my nose has become used to them? Some fragrances fill my personal space with aroma endlessly, while others (like this one) don't. I guess I'll just have to get over this phenomenon … but it's difficult when one is the type of person who wears fragrance for themselves … but I digress!
Black XS L'Aphrodisiaque is a worthy addition to the House of Paco Rabanne, one of the few designer houses I still bother with. I highly recommend this flanker to fans of the original Black XS.
